Is TDD winning the Emmy?

The eligibility period for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will compile the best of television from June 1, 2025, through May 31, 2026.

There is a category for Outstanding Music & Lyrics, which recognizes original songs made for TV shows. "The Dead Dance" will be eligible as it was written for Netflix's Wednesday, and released on September 3, 2025. 

Unlike the Oscars, the Emmys don't have many awards precursors, and when they do, they only recognize actors. The only other award that recognizes songs in TV are the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, which TDD managed to win last November, barely two months after it was released. The rest of the nominees were:

“Afterlife” from Devil May Cry. Performed by Evanescence.

“At Dawn I Look for You” from Étoile. Performed by Sons Of Raphael

“Give It a Good Try” from Unconventional. Performed by Craig Richey feat. Aubrey Shea.

“Rosebud” from Woman Of The Dead (Season 2). Performed By Vera Weberb

“The Line” from Arcane. Performed by Twenty One Pilots.

“Turned to Black” from Black Rabbit. Performed by The Black Rabbits (Albert Hammond Jr & Jude Law)

“Wolf Song” from Landman. Performed by Andrew Lockington

The main thing with these nominees is that, 6 of them are not eligible for this year's Emmys as they were released before June 1, 2025. The only potential contender is “Turned to Black” from Black Rabbit, another Netflix production that did not have the same impact as Wednesday.

Netflix has a history of strong campaigning for the Emmys, and this looks like a guarantee win for them. It is very uncommon to see a song from a TV show to be as successful as TDD was (despite what detractors say), and the Emmys have a history of giving the award to the most popular song in the category or the bigger name in the songwriters, examples are "A Beautiful Game" from Ted Lasso (written by Ed Sheeran and Max Martin), "Agatha All Along" from WandaVision (written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez), "All of Us" from Euphoria (written by Labrinth) aaaaaand.... "Til it Happens to You" from The Hunting Ground (written by Diane Warren). Yes, "Til it Happens to You" managed to win an Emmy, but Gaga was not given an award as the rules say the songwriters must've contributed to at least 20% of the song; her contribution was apparently only 10%. If TDD manages to get nominated, only Gaga and Andrew Watt will receive the nomination, as Cirkut did not contribute to more than 10%.

Gaga has already won an Emmy (Outstanding Music Direction for "Hold My Hand" live at the Super Bowl LIX), so she has ticked that box from her EGOT status, however another Emmy will just continue to cement her legacy; also, this would be a "Primetime" Emmy Award rather than a Sports Emmy. 

Winning the Emmy could also boost her chances at the 2027 Grammys, in the category of Best Song Written for Visual Media, which includes songs from movies and TV shows alike. Gaga could also decide to submit songs from The Devil Wears Prada 2, depending on how they develop commercially, but TDD seems to be her best choice as of now.

If these are the nominees... then who knows maybe. I'm more curious about why she allowed herself to be locked out of the Oscars race this year, with Glamorous Life being disqualified by default.
