New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdanitouted Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal on April 15 to tax expensive second homes as a sign of a progressive tide to tax the rich, but it will only apply to absentee owners.

The pied-à-terre tax puts an annual surcharge on homes valued above $5 million when there is no resident who lives primarily in New York City. The tax, which would need to be passed in the state’s delayed budget, would generate some $500 million in revenue annually, according to Hochul's office.

"If you can afford a $5 million second home that sits empty most of the year, you can afford to contribute like every other New Yorker," Hochul said in a statement. Non-resident owners do not pay New York City's income taxes. To avoid taxation, property owners could make the home their primary residence or rent it out someone else who does so.

Hochul, a moderate Democrat up for re-election in November, has been hesitant to raise taxes, which the city cannot do without the state government's permission. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, ran for mayor on a platform of free buses, universal childcare and city-run grocery stores paid for in part by levying higher taxes on the rich. Since he assumed office on Jan. 1, city officials have warned that multibillion-dollar budget shortfalls were left by his predecessor Eric Adams.

It is insane to me that there are enough rich pricks with houses that are sitting empty that they could generate half a billion dollars in revenue just by taxing them specifically  

We really can't afford billionaires. It should be illegal to have one CENT over $999,999,999.99 in wealth, regardless of whether it's in cash or not

I don't wanna give anybody ideas but hopefully there's no way for them to like...just have an employee/cleaner live there and claim them as a permanent resident to avoid the tax lol.

from everything I’ve ever heard about New York and their god awful prices for sh*thole apartments maybe they should focus on that first not this. Like unless it’s gonna suddenly make these people financially even to a regular person and take 80% of their income (which it should idgaf) this is useless I feel.

A vacancy home tax? We already have that in Canadas largest cities. But it applies to all homes not just the ultra wealthy homes

If someone lives there it provides housing for someone which is part of the point usually vacancy taxes are for

We have a bedroom tax here where if you have a spare bedroom that goes unused as a bedroom or the amount of people in your property doesn’t “adhere to the number of bedrooms” you pay more tax. (For example if there’s 2 adults and 2 children under a certain age of the same gender, but you have 3 bedrooms, you get taxed)

in the UK? I didn't know this but I get a council tax discount for living alone even though I have multiple bedrooms

And it only applies to people recieving social security. 
Because the tories only have a problem with the poor having homes.
