Automatic Military Draft To All Men Age 18 to 26 In USA To Commence In December 2026

Young, eligible men will be automatically registered for the military draft pool starting in December as part of a measure tucked into the annual defense policy bill Congress signed into law late last year.

Men ages 18 to 26 must already register for selective service in case a draft is required. The last time a draft was in effect was February 1973, during the Vietnam War.

Automatic registration is already in place in 46 states and territories, according to the Selective Service System’s 2024 report. The SSS proposed a rule to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs late last month to implement the practice nationwide.

The nationwide measure has no connection to the ongoing war with Iran and was passed with bipartisan support months before the current conflict with the country. But the Trump administration has declined to rule out the possibility of putting US troops on the ground, and the war has led to renewed attention on the draft policy.

CNN has reached out to the Selective Service for more information about the proposed rule.

Here’s what you need to know about automatic Selective Service registration.

According to the National Defense Authorization Act, which President Donald Trump signed into law in December, the automatic registration will apply to male US citizens and “every other male person” in the country between the ages of 18 and 26.

The mandatory registration applies to green-card holders, refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented men. Those on a nonimmigrant visas are exempt.

Currently, in states that haven’t enacted automatic registration, men must register “within 30 days of (their) 18th birthday,” according to the SSS website. The agency “accepts late registrations up until” a man’s 26th birthday.

It is a felony to not register for selective service and can result in the loss of certain benefits, like some student loans and federal jobs. It’s also a violation of the Military Selective Service Act, which could lead to imprisonment up to five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

Some places, like Arizona and Delaware, and Washington, DC, automatically register eligible men when they apply for driver’s license or another form of state identification. Meanwhile, in New York, the application for driver’s license includes a section that allows eligible men to register for selective service.

There would be a lottery, in which birthdays and numbers are randomly chosen.

People whose 20th birthdays fall in the year of the draft would be the first to get induction orders, followed, in order, by the following age groups: 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 19 and those who are more than six months past their 18th birthday.

I feel nothing but pure disgust. 🤮

And concern it will create an incentive for other countries to impose drafts of various forms too.

I mean the military itself doesn't want people drafted lmao. Not only is the old "soldiers, sailors, and marines" schtick fading out 'cause warfare is more technologically driven these days, they simply do not want to share or command ranks with people who don't want to be there.

I'm ready to catch my felony charge and sit in prison for five years if they ever do try to draft though :whitney: I'd rather die for my own freedom than kill for Donald Trump lmao.

US Government: Comitting murder in our soil really serious felony even carrying the death penalty in some states or at the very least a long jail sentence.

Also US Government: You must be on stanby to potentailly be chosen at random to kill people outside our borders, not complying is a felony with possible jail time.

Human logic :madge:

So, I dug a bit deeper (as in, just past the "omg no! the draft!") and this move was largely passed to save tax dollars :lolly:

Automatic registration is also about "modernizing" the system and not requiring 18 year old men to remember to sign up so there won't be any more accidental felons.

The odds of the actual draft happening again are still near zero 'cause the military doesn't need more people, it certainly doesn't need people who don't wanna be there, and the US population at large are incredibly opposed to it.

Congress would never approve a draft except in an existential threat situation which...I mean, I fear the only existential threat America could ever face would be America :icant:

They will post angry and crying videos on Tik Tok about how they cant even think and breathe rn and their life is over... followed by spawning mental illness to try and dodge the draft :ladyhaha:

(Ik mental illness is real calm down yall, but i mean the type that will really embellish it or make it up to get out of something)

Like can u imagine Generals trying to discipline those brats with strict Military culture vs Fragile GenZ feelings and on top of that not wanting to be there? They will not mesh, there will be a bigger logistocal headache managing your new recruits than actually fighting your enemy war. :rip:

But FR I would be doing the exact same thing in their shoes cuz who the hell wants to go to war? For so many reasons. Id be finding every possible excuse to dodge the draft, even taking jail time over it :madge:.

I just mean GenZ would take drama to the next level Vs Millenials whod just show extreme discontent and likely still go:enigma:

Late gen z and early gen alpha yup yup

In 2026, the youngest members of Generation Z (born 1997–2012) are 14 years old. While some definitions vary, many researchers mark 2012 as the final birth year for Gen Z, with those born in 2013 or later belonging to Generation Alpha. Therefore, the youngest Gen Zers are turning 14 during 2026. The oldest members of Generation Alpha are turning 16 years old in 2026. Born starting in 2010, the year the iPad was launched, this generation is defined as those born between 2010 and 2024, aka the iPad babies.

Its like the people who crave national service.
Militaries hate national service - it's a massive drain on resources and is largely useless.

Yeah, it's pretty interesting reading about how one of the first major opponents of a draft would be the Pentagon itself :ladyhaha:

They want career servicemen to operate their billion+ dollar equipment and fill their ranks. Not a bunch of unwilling citizens who will have to be trained, reprimanded constantly, and who will leave as soon as their mandatory service period is over.

Not to mention, regardless of party, any congress that approves a draft should be prepared to be voted out in its entirety within two years.

And any president that oversees it? Well, Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy will have some company :bear:

How can young men be automatically enrolled in the military? They either want to go or not; it's a human decision. I understand they can take a day off, do a preliminary examination and they're free. In a war situation, they're drafted. I don't know the specifics of the US military, but in Poland, we have voluntary military service.

But never mind... I personally wouldn't want to serve in the military, even if war were to break out... That's the government's business, not ours :neyde:
