I always thought the raw sound at the end of Angel Down Work Tape sounded like it might hurt, but it makes me love that version more than the final version.

I can see why she sings lower on the other one. But it’s something so powerful I love hearing it

Yea, in songs like Perfect illusion, Blade or grass, Dope, Angel down, Till it happens to you (off the top of my head) she should really use a softer tone sometimes. And don't get me started with the horrors of the Shallow bridge :ladyhaha: And especially with certain covers she did during her tribute era, she really played too much on the "look how strong my voice is" card instead of just doing the song pleasantly.

REALITY

I thought this thread was gonna be about her screaming "PUT YOUR F*CKING HANDS UP!!!!" every 10 seconds :icant:

To answer the OP, I don't think so. If anything, I want her to scream more in her music. She's got a powerful voice, and it's what makes her iconic and unique amongst all the pop stars these days that sound alike.

We talking spicy or plain? Ngl I love a good spicy nugget (I can’t endorse the Frosty dipping. I will look the other way, however, I will silently judge.)

I think the discourse is over yelling, not screaming.

She do be yelling but I personally don't mind it. It brings to mind the full body convulsions when she used to sing the "HIGH FOR SO LONG" part of Dope :icant:

Her screams/yells are some of my favorite parts of seeing her live/watching her live videos. I don't know how but they just energize and fuel me, and she is definitely trained to do em properly. I'm sure she has been more screamish at other shows I wasn't at, but I always wish she screamed more during every concert I have seen of hers (even with Tony Bennett lmfao, she coulda snuck a "put your ****ing hands up" before cheek to cheek loll)

I agree with this and have noticed it increasing more and more over the years. It always feels like she is in "I can sing, I must prove that I can sing, listen to my powerful vocals!" mode and it can be a bit much to listen to at times. I feel like she used to be better at balancing it with softer moments and using her voice in different ways that showed her abilities more naturally. There are moments where she lets her softer side shine like "Close To You" that I enjoy but most of the time it's constant shouty vocals (that sometimes mess with her pronunciation and make her blend words together). Outside of that the constant "Put your hands up!" screaming is a bit much and can make her seem a bit robotic at times, especially when she does it like 3 or 4 times in a row.

Based on the OP, I assume that by screaming, you just mean "big vocals".

I love them but one of the reasons I don't like MAYHEM so much is the lack of diversity in that sense. Almost every song has a big belted chorus, and not always with a great melody but that's yet another topic :triggered:

I prefer when there's more diversity between the songs, it needs to be a journey and every song should be its own particular chapter. Her previous albums are more satisfying to hear.

Watch any videos of The Cure live. Those vocals sound great in the studio but usually end up with her yelling the lyrics on stage :bear:

Which, fair, 'cause the amount of breath control necessary for that would mean sacrificing basically all movement and dance songs, but still.

Those falceto of cure or heal me was executed very well BUT it not that much her best sound. I feel that that voice doesn't compliment her sound at all. (If you hear it in Ariana or Billie sounds so airy. But on her, the chest voice is super powerful and her head voice (the psedo-opera on Government, Bloody Mary etc) is super magic-theatrical and they fir way better with the genre (more hard way pop) when the cure n heal me had a very specific 2010s soft sound (i specifically didn't like it at all)

I always thought the same thing,I feel like starting with Joanne she’s making songs that might be hard to sing nightly. And I always wondered why she didn’t do more songs like “Paparazzi” which sounds softer on the track

I love when she screams - I however did notice that sometime between the Joanne world tour and enigma - they way they sounded changed - and they haven’t gone back. So she’s either changed the technique or it’s been damaged somehow. Looking past technique - I know when I ended up contracting COVID it damaged my voice very bad and even a couple years after I still haven’t 100% recovered. I know she got covid during the chromatica ball ( which is the first show I think I noticed fully that her screams sound different consistently) it’s possible that the same thing happened to her? Idk.

For me it's not really about the actual screams (put your hands up!!!) or the added growls she does on some songs but it's how she insists on loudly singing the high notes while her voice can't sustain it so she often sounds strained and grating. A few examples are how almost whiny and quite literally like a yell HBDYWM sounds, some parts of WIY (SSAWYOURFACEAND-), TDD (YEAHI'll keep on-) and so on. She has a very nice warmth to her voice that gets thrown out the window when she sings loud and strained like that. I agree that she needs to use her voice in more ways because she's great at lower notes, nearly spoken lines, soft vocals (her 2015 Imagine performance is a great example imo), operatic voice, even her nasal and far-back voice of the studio version of Abracadabra is very interesting (pay the toll to the angels drawing circles in the clouds).
