Alvitr 1,429
Send 2 songs that you think define Dark Pop, where of one is a Gaga song and the other from another artist/band I’m curious to see what everyone’s definition of Dark Pop is, as music is so subjective even if there are “fixed” genres I think Bloody Mary is one of Gagas most distinctive Dark Pop songs. Also gonna steal Disease. I would also consider Auroras When the Dark Dresses Lightly as a dark pop song. A banger. Worth to mention Allie X - Our Lady of sorrows, also one i I would consider a dark pop song. YOUR TURN 1 Dark Pop song and 1 from another artist/band. For the little GGD readers: Genre names are quite a thing that gets tossed around with little to no knowledge. And those who are familiar with music genres knows it is jungle to navigate. Sometimes naming genres can be very subjective to describe the music. Music taste is subjective and the knowledge or vocabulary genres are not that integrated in the common everyday listener/ ”radio listener”…. So Dark Pop can be defined differently for people. So shortly, Dark Pop is often mainstream pop blended with alternative electronic / synth sounds, can have goth or indie influenced textures. Sometimes distorted instruments and gritty sounds. Lyrically leaning towards heavy emotions, moodiness, vulnerability, can have themes of esoteric/magic/ otherworldly things, twisted ideas or fantasies can appear too. Bronco 17,776
The ultimate dark pop song imo. The only comparable Gaga song imo. Like she does pop & deals with dark subjects, but I think fans overstate how much of her catalogue is dark pop. TheFrenchGuy 3,652
For me dark pop is more about theme/mood than sound. I'm looking for dark themes like death, magic, religion, etc and something immersive, bold and well, dark. Gaga has a lot of dark pop in terms of themes and mood, not so many in terms of sound. I would say Monster or Government Hooker Other artists : Dark themes and mood one of my favorites lately. More analog in sound but quite dark in the lyrics and overall mood. Also just a very good song Dark sound Edited Monday at 07:21 PM by TheFrenchGuy
HotLikeMexico 6,017
Literally 85% of Depeche Mode’s discography. Like I would consider them the poster children of Dark Pop. 2

It has a duality to it that I feel is so intriguing 12 minutes ago, Bronco said: Like she[Gaga] does pop & deals with dark subjects, but I think fans overstate how much of her catalogue is dark pop. This I kind of agree, she touches it here and there LG8 out Friday May 15th

However I wish this song had a bigger climax, imagine a trance or techno breakdown in the end. Still a beautiful music piece, certainly leaning to the genre ARTPOP. 20 minutes ago, TheFrenchGuy said: Dark sound This one however, I feel like this is much more Post Punk, a little industrial and not so much dark pop. They just see rock as Ozzy/Alice Cooper darkness 2. They think biblical imagery/darker narratives make it dark pop. And like i get it but sonically its not that dark. Its like how Florence + the Machine deals with a lot of dark themes in all of her work. But not all of her music is dark, some is deliberately light while working with dark topics. I recommend the whole album, it's my top album of 2025 next to Mayhem. 5 minutes ago, Alvitr said: This one however, I feel like this is much more Post Punk, a little industrial and not so much dark pop. Yes, it’s quite easy to define something by just the stereotypical viewpoint, in any category in life really… So yeah I agree. What you describe with Florence I think I understand, my mind went to Queen of peace as an example. What would you say is a song that is light but have dark topics? HBHBHB: Ship to Wreck, Queen of Peace HAH: Hunger is almost jovial on a sonic level given its about anorexia DF: Free, Choreomania, Morning Elvis ES: Everbody Scream, Sympathy Magic and the epitome of this style of hers - You Can Have It All. Honestly, this album is the definition of turning darkness into light. Live it feels like a ritual. The gays know how to party

Tbf some post-punk can really fit dark pop. Siouxie Sioux is the archetype of this imo. I'd love to see more Siouxie in Gaga's music The gays know how to party
bim 770
Disease and Bloody Mary are the darker Gaga songs. I feel she has darker themes in brighter sounding music. For non-Gaga songs, maybe Nightshade by Sam Quealy (really love her album Blonde Venus) or Bury a Friend by Billie or Seven Devils by Florence.
