I'm assuming they have Tourette's syndrome. It can't be controlled so it should probably not really be a story.  Imagine how humiliating it would be to have an episode like that in such a public setting.

I saw a video someone with tourettes made talking about them saying the N-word at one point, and tourettes (at least from what I've gathered, so please correct me if I'm wrong) apparently "chooses" words the person knows at random regardless of what they are. So it isn't intentionally being racist as it is out of control. Again, I am by no means an expert, so if anyone wants to correct me please do so.

This is pretty sad/awkward for everyone involved, but... if the goal of campaigning is shed light/raise awareness about something, mission accomplished? 😬

I’ve seen so many tiktok videos of people with tourette syndrome shouting 💣 at airports and on aircrafts 🙈💀 people around them just awkwardly smile and get on with their day. :laughga: But they must have a doctor note to be recognised as a medical condition- that's their free pass I guess.

As someone with Tourette's whose symptoms have drastically reduced over time, I used to dread public places when I was a child because I would end up humiliating myself and my family if I was out with them. I still have nightmares of the things I've said in front of people :smh:

More context from JustJared:

“Tourette’s Syndrome is a disability and the tics you’ve heard tonight are involuntary, which means the person who has Tourette’s Syndrome has no control over their language. We apologize if you are offended tonight,” Alan added later in the night.

Variety reported that John “left of his own accord and was not asked to leave by BAFTA” during the second half of the ceremony.

I can't imagine how it must've felt for all parties

I don't know about yall but if I was on that stage and someone shouted f@gg0t i would quite simply not be graceful about it. Of the hundreds of thousands of words in your lexicon your brain chose that one when you saw me? Why didn't he shout the N word at any other point in the ceremony? I understand that he can't control it but I don't see how you can argue that there's no racism behind it when it only happened when he saw people the slur discriminates against lmao. Unfortunate situation for all involced but I don't think his condition absolves him from issuing an immediate apology.

So many people don't really understand tourettes (especially coprolalia).

Still, regardless people have a right to be upset by the word... it's just an awful situation all around.

I'm confused why censors weren't doing anything especially since that wasn't the first moment he had a swearing tic during the show.

While I can't fully comprehend it myself, it's called coprolalia which is a form of tourettes. It's uncontrollable, some think it's because a part of the brain is trying to find the most vulgar tic, (my wording might be wrong here). But he should issue an apology because it still causes harm regardless of intent.
