Canada and China are working an agreement to reduce some tarrifs largely in a reversal to how things were a few years ago. The deal is not very broad. Canada would merely drop some EV tarrifs it slapped on at USAs request and in return China would drop retalitory tarrifs on canola and sea food of which some was believed to be retaliation for the arrest of Huwaei CFO Meng (also at the request of USA)

Trump did not like that and threatned that if the deal is signed it will slap 100% tarrifs on Canada

Essentially Trump has been telling Canada it does not need to trade with them but seeks to punish them anyway if Canada seeks alternatives, alternatives that so far is largely just damage control to retalitory tarrifs it faced allying with the US in the first place by granting US requests

Trump does realize its not just the USA that exists in the world...you share this planet with other countries and neighboring countries as well. Isolating from the world while also trying to take over it is cult 101

Hes all ego and loves attention. So i think getting to be President of the US (the worlds largest economy and military power) makes him feel special and making life hard for other Countries (even if it harms the US in the process as well) makes him feel even more emboldened and validated.

Its as childish as it comes, especially when he allows his personal hurt feelings and who he was offended by (which isnt hard to do) to dictate foreign policy and who he goes after :toofunny:

It may feel good tk hsi fragile ego but America is not invinceable. It does have economic and financial weaknesses as well as natural resource shortfalls that can be of significant vulnerability . And militarily speaking it is mighty but its still less than 50% of Nato. Yes its a very large power on its own right but not powerful enough to take on the whole world at once. Even the US benefits from its alliances

The part thats most perplexing is his adversarial mentality that goes something like this: "We can go into a scarring economic war that will hurt us both badly, but as long as I hurt you to a greater degree than you hurt me, I win". Thats literally his mentality. Less damage is still damage, so how does that benefit America?

The only way someone can see that as a win is if making America stronger and economically healthier isnt actually their concern or goal but rather getting the oppurtunity to show off the strength. Its total bananas. The guy is literally 5 years old :deadbanana:

I'm not fully convinced that he knows the difference between a tariff and a sanction

Anything goes!

That may be true. But more importantly im also not fully convinced he understands the difference between mutually beneficial and mutually destructive vs win and loose

He cant seem to wrap his mind around the fact that there doesnt always have to be a winner and a looser. Often trade situations can be a win-win or sometimes even a loose-loose

But hes very adversarial so he needs to interpret a situation as he wins and hos oponent looses. Even if in actually hes also loosing (just maybe to a lesser degree because the US is so large). But less damage is still damage, thats not a win :toofunny:

CELINE

Carney is not confrontational. But he should consider hinting at the US that we can dump their treasuries and shock the US market.  Canada is already in a tight economic situation; we can stomach the loss further.

Idk how it all works but does Canada rely on the US that much? It'd be great if they could just say 'f.uck it' and accept the 100% tarrifs and stop trading with the US

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
