Ariana following Gaga's path?

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were revealed today and one of the biggest surprises was the fact that Wicked: For Good received 0 nominations, despite having a decent presence throughout the awards season. Though Cynthia Erivo had missed nominations for Best Actress at the Critics' Choice and the Actors Awards (former SAG Awards), Ariana Grande has been consisting in being a candidate for Best Supporting Actress, however, she missed the Oscars. Instead, Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas made the final list for their performances in Sentimental Value, despite both missing the Golden Globes and the Actors Awards (Ibsdotter Lilleaas also missing the BAFTA). This situation sounds familiar...

A few years ago, we all know that Gaga missed the Oscars despite being the only actress on that season that managed to get nominations for Best Actress as the Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice, the BAFTA and the SAG Awards (the eventual winner, Jessica Chastain, won the Critics' Choice and the SAG, but lost the Golden Globe to Nicole Kidman and even missed the BAFTA nomination). House of Gucci, just like Wicked: For Good, had received a lukewarm reception from critics and a decent box office performance, and Gaga's acting divided the audience, with some calling it a home run, while others panned it as forced. Ariana had similar comments in Wicked: For Good, with some calling it a character evolution compared to the movie's prequel, and others calling it cheesy. Either way, both ended up missing the Oscars.

Some people argued that House of Gucci did not live to the expectations and it hurt Gaga's chances at the Oscars (the movie only received one nomination for Best Costume Design), and it seems like the same happened to Ariana, with Wicked: For Good getting zero nominations.

Will Ariana be used as bait for publicity in a forced-to-be-lovers superhero movie she barely acts in? Time will tell!

There’s no world in which they were ever gonna get nominated though, because the Academy prioritises things like drama and biopics. Comedy, Musicals, Horror’s and Superhero movies are often overlooked.

If TONI COLLETTE didnt get a nomination for Hereditary there’s no world in which Ari and Cynthia deserved a nom. They all (Gaga included) sadly have to move away from roles that are too close to home or have anything to do with music whatsoever.

People also overlook For Good in general because they forget it’s based off of a second act of a musical that’s based off of essentially published fan fiction, where as the average movie goer and movie critic thinks of it as a movie sequel so they lack context for what happens. They just say “well why wasn’t this plot thread cleared up or this reference to the wizard of oz not used” etc they lack context that’s required to understand the project as a whole. It seemed from what I saw online It worked well for people who saw the double feature but people who waited a year without ever going back to watch the original just before seeing For Good didnt like it statistically.

I think Wicked For Good was generally more well-received than HoG though. Same with Ariana's performance compared to Gaga's. The movie was simply not as good as the first one, which led to it getting no attention during awards season.

I don't think she's following Gaga's path because, let's be honest, Gaga has a bigger hill to climb. Ariana can still get other acting roles without the stink of Wicked For Good because it's not like that was a colossal failure. The combo of HoG and Joker 2 was bad-bad. I think it's smart of Gaga to take on these smaller cameo roles (i.e., Wednesday, Devil Wears Prada 2) to still get her name in the acting world out there without fully committing to another large role before she's ready.

No imho, Ari's next movie scheduled for this year is a sequel for comedy movie. And I think she will be right at home with it, since she hails from Nickelodeon comedy TV shows before she is a singer.

Very different than what Gaga trying to do with her acting career, which so far have been involving deep acting.

They were both nominated for the first movie though, so it was possible that either one or both could be nominated again. Gaga was also nominated for ASIB, so while I don't disagree that the Academy has a bias against certain movie genres (like the ones you mentioned), it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that Ariana could've been nominated again.

This is (kinda) her House Of Gucci but Gaga actually had chances and was ultimately robbed because the movie lost momentum (it wasn't as good as it could've been and people stopped talking about it among other things like the dumb accent discussion despite Gaga's being pretty accurate). I don't think Ariana had a chance this year

Also let's not forget that Ariana is already moving to theater next year for A Sunday at the park with george so i think in terms of acting she's leaning more towards musical theater roles

Let's see what happens at the Olivers in 2028

It’s hard to get nominated twice in a row at the Oscars unless you’re someone like Meryl Streep and doing back to back features. But even then most the time someone wins best actress they often only then win supporting actress from then on. There’s been no repeat winners for Best Actress since 2000 for example. And only one non-white person has ever won it and that is Halle Berry in 2002 I believe.

They deserved some other nominations, but they absolutely didnt deserve any nominations for actress awards imo not even close, also Ari is joint lead in the movie so she couldn’t get a best supporting actress from them as hard as she tried I think.

Fair on the first paragraph.

I don't necessarily think Ariana deserved to get nominated for Wicked For Good, but I think she was the film's best chance at an acting nomination this year. Cynthia was also good, but she definitely got more to do in the first movie. Overall, I'm not bummed that WFG didn't get any nominations, but I am surprised. This is really a fall from grace compared to the first movie.
