Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, harshely criticized Moldova’s leadership, cleaiming that Moldova's policies amount to a forced political alignment with Romania and a loss of Moldovan sovereignty.

Her comments were made in response to President Maia Sandu’s statement that she would personally support reunification with Romania if such a decision were put to a referendum.

Russia in favor of someone else's sovereignty. Sure.

Russia cannot comprehend 2 countries can decide to get close in absence of threats or agression.

Russia likes vessel states that look like they have sovereignty but gain them more say by having more „votes“. Kind of the idea of the Soviet Union. (And what the EU looks like to them)

yk theres a part of Moldova near Ukraine called Transnistria which has a Russian-backed independence movement, using the ethnic surplus of Russians and Ukrainians in that area as an excuse

Anything goes!

I just realized Moldova and Romania speak the same language Romanian. According to Russia, why do they not have a good relationship with Romania?

well Romania is in the eu and Moldova isn't maybe Russia doesn't want Moldova in the eu for some reason?

also hypothetically seizing Moldova would probably make it easier for them to seize ukraine bcuz Russia would be invading from all sides (the caucasus, belgorod, Belarus, Crimea, + Moldova)

it seems that they're saying Moldova hates Romania just for the sake of it

actually now that I look at it that kinda has nothing to do with what you asked but idk

That has historically been a goal of Russia. Keeping enough percent of the population of previous soviet countries Russian to have the excuse of „saving their people from oppression“.
