I wish I had your optimism.

Not really optimism so much as pattern recognition, tbh. One of the most common themes of this admin has been: 1.) authoritarian posturing, 2.) lawless overreach, 3.) “resistance is futile, utter domination and power consolidation is inevitable” messaging from regime, 4.) plan blows up in their face in some way (donor backlash, loss in court, cratering public favorability, shoddy execution etc), 5.) they walk it back and either claim a narrow victory or pretend they never tried to do what they set out to do in the first place.

Trump had all but forgotten the Greenland thing until his DOJ + DOD convinced him they could convict Maduro and, now that they’ve apprehended him, we’re currently in phase 3 of that cycle where the admin is acting like they not only can unilaterally dominate the entire Western Hemisphere (much like the FCC jawboning of Kimmel saw him as the “first domino” in the inevitable domination of the airwaves by the regime), but that domination is inevitable because of their current inertia.

The charges against Maduro are, imo, fairly flimsy and, if/when they fail to convict, their “inertia” blows back in their face and I’m fairly certain they’ll drop Greenland (again) just like Trump dropped the FCC bullshit, the tariffs, the military occupation of American cities etc. I could be wrong, but this feels like pretty brazen overreach and a lot of similar attempts at overreach from this admin have failed pretty spectacularly.

People in the US are too comfortable to go to the extremes needed to remove him and his entire administration from power. This isn't me insulting, but more so stating the situation at hand. People can still eat and make money. If we were in Myanmar or Nepal this would be a very different story.

People need to learn that the Venezuela situation is setting up the US for more intervention abroad regardless of what your position is in that matter.

Not to mention it will likely embolden the other imperialist crazies of the world.

But...convict Maduro it's easy, I mean I didn't even pay attention to the accusations, it was narcotráfico, etc, narcotráfico, etc...but you really think that they would bring Maduro to America and fail to convict him. That's not possible lol. Plus Maduro has worst crimes against millions of venezuelans, they should judge him for that instead.

I don't know, but I don't believe that .

Not really, imo. Narcoterroism is an incredibly specific charge and Trump’s admin attempted to levy similar charges against Maduro’s government + Tren de Araguas to justify using the military to deport Venezuelans and numerous federal courts said they hadn’t provided enough compelling evidence that Maduro’s regime was engaged in drug-related activities designed to destabilize the US (aka “narcoterrorism”).

In terms of whether or not they would bring him to the US if they couldn’t convict? They absolutely would lmao. Trump’s whole schtick is “authoritarian strongman theatre first, process second” and process is usually where it falls apart. His admin has a 93% failure rate in court, he’s pressured his DOJ to bring phony charges and unwinnable cases against multiple political opponents that have been summarily tossed due to lack of evidence + procedural error, not to mention that this is a guy who took a case where he attempted to amend the US Constitution via Executive Order (something that cannot be done legally) all the way to the Supreme Court lol.

In terms of the crimes against Venezuelans, Maduro should absolutely be held to task for that, but that’s not within the jurisdiction of the US justice system (in part because the US does not and has not historically abided by universal jurisdiction of international law because they are not a party to the Rome Statute of the ICC) and would be better left to either Venezuelan courts or some ICC affiliated body/government.

It feels like the only thing that can or will stop him is his own body.

I wish I could see the Trump administration like you. But I take the words and threats they do very serious. The way they talk and threat other countries disgustes me and makes afraid.

Let's hope for the best, cause we live very dangerous times.

It’s not that I don’t think they’re serious, it’s that I don’t think they’re competent haha. But I agree about it being disgusting and it is deeply terrifying regardless of whether or not they succeed. Makes me sick to see the leadership of my country not only terrorizing and harming many of its own citizens, but also destabilizing and threatening so many other countries.

Honestly, if France or the UK turned around and called Trump's bluff immediately and waved the N word around that little pedo rat would fold instantly.

I don't think anyone's going to be threatening the US with nuclear weapons because that's a threat that nobody would carry out, so no point in making it in the first place.

It's a valid threat - if the US were to attack NATO nations, there would be no other defence possible.
It's the exact reason France has always maintained an independent nuclear arsenal.
And there's a very very clear purpose as to why the UK, Germany and France have all stepped up plans for expanding military readiness through conscription plans/incentivised army training contracts etc since the Trump WH started vocally talking about conquest of european territories.

The main European powers recognise Trump is a threat and have a two pronged foreign policy as a result, a balance of distracting & placating him alongside preparing themselves for potential conflict with the US/a US proxy. Western Europe doesn't give a **** about Russia, we know Putin won't overextend beyond the old Warsaw pact lines as he doesn't have the resources and China would never support it. He's also just not ****ing good at it, look at how long its taken him to get Georgia under thumb even without internationally backed military opposition.

I wonder is climate change a factor in all this. It IS an existential threat. If parts of the world are going to become uninhabitable, that might be the driver for the superpowers to make radical changes to the world order.

I'm glad someone else shares this opinion :icant:

Generally every action that idiot takes has me saying "well that's horrifying. Wonder how he'll f*ck this one up".
