Dozens of people are feared to have been killed and around 100 others injured after a fire tore through a crowded bar during a ‍New Year's Eve party in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana in southwestern Switzerland, Swiss police said on Thursday.

"Several tens of people are presumed to have died," Frederic Gisler, police commander in the Wallis canton in southwestern Switzerland, told reporters.

The Italian foreign ministry, citing Swiss police, say they believe around 40 people have died.

Police, firefighters and rescuers rushed to the popular resort, one of the top-ranked ski destinations in Europe.

The "fire of undetermined origin" broke out in a bar popular with tourists, police in the Wallis canton in southwestern Switzerland said in a statement.

A police spokesman named the bar as Le Constellation, which has a capacity of 300 people and another 40 people on its terrace, according to the Crans-Montana website.

The spokesman said some 100 people had gathered there for New Year celebrations.

10 helicopters, 40 ambulances and 150 responders were sent to the scene. The majority of those injured are "significantly" injured with severe burns.

Most have been sent to Valais hospital - its intensive care unit is now full, Mathias Reynard, the region's council leader says.

No cause of the fire was mentioned - but the prosecutor ruled out an attack

French nationals Emma and Albane, who were inside the bar, say "in a matter of seconds, the entire ceiling was ablaze" and that evacuating was "very difficult" due to narrow exit routes. They believe a birthday candle held too close to the ceiling

I live an hour away from that resort. Some of my close friends live there year-round. I don't know yet if any of them were partying there last night.

A teenage survivor recounts a kind of recurring show in this basement venue, which had no proper emergency exit and could hold up to 300 people. The show consisted of two waitresses serving champagne, one perched on the back of the other, brandishing bottles with candles, small fireworks type, stuck on top. One of the waitresses raised a bottle too close to the ceiling, which instantly caught fire. Smoke filled the room and, unfortunately, the panic prevented everyone from getting out.

Confirmed death toll: around 40 people died and more than a 100 suffered severe burns and/or smoke inhalation.

How many more accidents of this type will there be? Tragic but so totally predictable!

That's crazy. How is that building allowed to run their business? Considering it's in EU, I'd think they have strict building safety code??

Glad you are safe. Hope you'll hear from your close friends soon, and they're all safe and sound.

Safety codes are in place. Generally speaking, they are followed and enforced. But in certain cases, such as this one, which is typical: ski resort, crowd of tourists, the holiday season... Operators take liberties that are not always monitored or respected. In my opinion, this case will probably never resolve. And if it ever does, so to speak, as always, the authorities will pass the buck and scapegoats will be designated, leaving families and loved ones in limbo for years...

There is a YT video showing another evening in the same club, with waitresses perched on top of each other, the one on top brandishing a bottle with a sparkler that shoots sparks 50 cm high. Not to mention that the decor of the place was obviously not fireproof. In another video taken yesterday eve, we see the ceiling suddenly catch fire over several meters, as if it were made of fabric soaked in gasoline!

It is unthinkable that no one pointed out these problems beforehand. Neither the authorities, nor the owners, nor the customers. A bunch of young people under the influence in an establishment run by reckless individuals, left unattended by authorities who are likely lax or absent, as is often the case in these winter resorts.

Like I said. This is just the beginning of the nightmare for everyone involved at every level...

Watch this video. Turn on the multi-language subtitles to understand. These images may be shocking, but they can also raise awareness so that tragedies like this—and many others of the same ilk—can be prevented.

There are many questions: Sparkling candles spitting flames, their use in a closed and crowded place, no obvious marked emergency exits, no smoke detectors or sprinklers, flammable soundproofing foam, lack of safety checks, general lack of awareness or negligence on the part of the owners, organizers, and local authorities. All of these practices have been going on for years without any reaction, perception of danger, or adequate measures taken as a result.

A few young people had the foresight to get out immediately when the first flames appeared. Lucky for them and their survival instinct. As for the others...

At the risk to just look like a party pooper, I think there's a lot to learn from these images. Today's phones are everywhere and allow such documents to surface. Let's watch and learn. And prevent.

Teenagers as young as 14 and 15 were among those who died in the New Year's Eve bar fire that killed 40 people in Switzerland, police said on Sunday, as the Pope offered his sympathies to the victims and their families.

Police in Valais said they had identified 16 more of those who died in the blaze in Crans-Montana, one of the worst disasters in recent Swiss history.

The newly identified victims included 10 Swiss nationals, two Italians, one person with Italian-Emirati citizenship, one Romanian, one person from France and one from Turkey, Valais police said. No names were released.

The youngest person identified so far is a 14-year-old Swiss girl, while two 15-year-old girls, also from Switzerland, were among the dead.

Ten of the other bodies identified on Sunday were teenagers aged 16 to 18, police said. Also identified were two Swiss men aged 20 and 31, and a French national aged 39.

In total, police have identified 24 of those who died in the blaze in the mountain resort.

Late on Saturday, police said two Swiss women aged 24 and 22, along with two Swiss men aged 21 and 18, had been identified.
