During the performance of ‘Smile’, Tony’s performance of ‘I Left My Heart In San Francisco’ can be seen 🥹

Infamous? Why is it infamous?

2 million views for a performance from 1960! The rest of his more viewed performances are farrrr more recent

Infamous: "Well-known for a bad quality or deed, having a notorious, evil, or disgraceful reputation, often used for people, actions, or events associated with wickedness, scandals, or crimes, standing in contrast to positive fame"

I think you mean “iconic.” “Infamous” implies it’s well-known for a negative reason.

I can’t seem to find the article/video, but I’m pretty sure Tony said that Charlie Chaplin himself would thank him for breathing new life into the song ‘Smile’, and making it resonate across generations. There’s something so fitting and emotional to then see Gaga performing it with Tony playing in the background. She’s the new torchbearer.

Anyone else wished they would have kept the vocals a bit more raw. Sometimes it alsmost feels “not live” if you know what I mean. She is an awesome singer, but it feels too perfect at points

Not exactly how I’d put it, but I agree. I think they put some light tuning over the vocals at certain points, which sometimes introduces weird distortion when she does very human things with her voice which makes the vocal occasionally sound “off” (different vowel shapes, different vibrato speeds). IMO, it’s no where near as bad here as it was in the Kimmel performance of HM and I generally like how they engineered her vocal (very bright, very forward, solid reverb), but the slight tuning is the thing that annoys me the most.

Yes. This. Even though I didnt find it that bad in the Kimmel performance. But her she sometimes does body movements and the voice just remains a bit to stable. But some tuning is fine (it is not like she needs much of it), but I just wish they keep it raw sometimes. She did the same with the Chromatica Ball, and I am like “just let her sing, it is already good”

Ngl I do honestly just think her breath control is sometimes that good, but I think they may have just normalized the EQ levels on the moments when she was doing a lot of movement for the sake of volume/tone consistency, which I don’t necessarily mind, but I see what you mean. Thank God they didn’t doctor the vocals here to the extent they did on CBT because I find it borderline unwatchable because of the vocal engineering 🪦

This was definitely recorded into a mix and tuned after/worked on! It is phenomenal but not the same as those live shows from Kimmel and Colbert, and not entirely how it was heard by audience members... but it is still a stunning performance and I think it works so well having the extra tuning to the sound! I would still kill to see this set live in a bar by her
