Tiger variety with accentuated black stripes emerges in Similipal Tiger Reserve

India’s tiger recovery has created an unexpected crisis in Similipal Tiger Reserve, where isolation has led to severe inbreeding. In 2014 only four tigers remained, including one male whose son, T12, inherited a rare pseudo-melanistic coat.

As T12 became the dominant breeder, the mutation spread rapidly.

Photographer Prasenjeet Yadav spent weeks searching before finally spotting T12, now an elusive, aging patriarch. His striking dark appearance reflects both Similipal’s rebound in numbers and its genetic instability. 

While India overall now has more than 3,100 tigers thanks to NTCA protections, Similipal’s isolation means even harmless mutations spread quickly. To counter this, forest officials began a targeted plan to introduce unrelated mates from more diverse populations.

Female tigers from Chandrapur’s Tadoba-Andhari reserve—genetically diverse and thriving—were selected, tranquilized, and brought to Similipal.

 

Their selection is supported by extensive genetic research from Uma Ramakrishnan, whose team has built a large DNA database using samples from various sources to map India’s historic and current genetic variation.

Long-term tiger survival depends on maintaining movement between reserves via corridors and underpasses. For isolated areas like Similipal, however, carefully managed translocation remains crucial to preventing genetic decline and ensuring a resilient future for these iconic big cats.
