I think there was this idea that if you're not "putting on a show," then you're being the "real you." Joanne was much more stripped back, in terms of the music, the fashion, everything. So I think the public perception was "Oh, she's being her real self! She doesn't need all the gimmicks and sh*t," when in reality, the gimmicks, avant-garde fashion, and electronic/dance music are still part of Gaga's "true" identity too. 

I think MAYHEM perfectly encapsulates who Gaga is. It's also a culmination of all the healing she's done over the years. She can embrace the weird, strange, and avant-garde and separate herself from the "Gaga" persona to lead a healthier, more fulfilling life.
