Hardest fandom moment?

2013 was the worst, that's going to be difficult to top. It just felt like everyone was against her and we were desperately scrabbling for proof that she wasn't flopping or hated. Everything seemed to be going wrong and that entire era was so misunderstood in a deliberate way from the public that it was infuriating. I genuinely wondered if, as much as I didn't want it to be true, if this was the end of Gaga's career as a major league artist, if she was just going to be fall away and become niche and ultimately looked back on as a flash in the pan. Thank God she changed management and got back on her feet to become bigger and better than ever. If you'd told me at the time that, in 5 years time, she'd be playing the lead role in a movie that would have one of the most successful soundtracks of all time and the lead single would be a massive smash that would break records and she'd almost win an acting Oscar, I would never have believed you. It just goes to show that Gaga's talent will shine through and the cream always rises to the top.

Aside from that, 2010 was also a bit of a tumultuous time because that was when Gaga was at her ultimate peak and when some artists are in that space, tragic things can happen. She had a stalker who threatened to shoot her who she had to get a restraining order against and when we thought she had lupus, I was afraid she would actually die young. I was so worried that she was going to be one of those artists who died at 27. And also, in late 2016-2017, when she was going through fibro and cancelling those concert dates (with a tour that didn't even feel like something she'd usually do), I feared that she'd never perform again like how she used to. And personally, I wasn't keen on the Chromatica era. Aside from the smash of ROM, that era promised a lot but didn't deliver much and let's be real, if it hadn't been for ROM, that era would've been a total write-off and we might not have even got a tour out of it. It seemed that so many fans loved it and I felt a bit left out so I'm thrilled to be truly back in the fold with Mayhem.

For me I think things started shifting towards the end of the BTW era. I think it's when the Edge of Glory MV changed from its original concept and we got this really low-budget video without a story which just felt like it didn't fit with the amazing string videos we had just before that (Bad Romance -> Telephone -> Alejandro -> Born This Way -> Judas) the Yoü and I video also didn't really work for me, and although I love the entire spoken word part of Marry the Night the music video part of it also felt rushed and low budget.

We go from there to the Apple Music festival performance where she debuted seven songs from Artpop. And tbh I was really excited about it, it was new and not my style but I was still here for it. But then the album rollout started and I didn't like the album versions as much as the live versions, I didn't connect with the songs as much, Dope's new lyrics ruined the whole song for me, the live performance at the VMAs where she was basically just naked felt really cheap and desperate to me. The GUY video also didn't grab me despite that being one of my favorite Gaga songs ever. And then the branding of it as a Rave, and then the vomit artist going to the tour... It was a mess, like someone else said. Not to mention the photoshoot where she was just naked for no reason with the big blue ball. It just didn't make any sense. And that album cover is still her worst to date. And then there was the app which completely was overhyped and oversold and did not live up to expectations. I think that's when I started losing faith in her as a visionary artist and just seeing her as "just another popstar" and it really put some distance between me and her art.

The C2C era was cute but she cancelled the show I was supposed to see on the day of the performance and that really bothered me. Then Joanne happened and I thought the album was too clean for its songs and too autotuned, it needed a bit more raw emotion. I had a ticket to the Joanne tour and she cancelled that AGAIN. So I was obviously pissed off by that point. And I also didn't like Perfect Illusion AT ALL.

The Cure came out and it wasn't a song that grabbed me. Then we got ASIB and although I loved shallow and a couple of other songs the film and the majority of the soundtrack wasn't for me.

Then we got Chromatica and to be fair it got me a bit more interested in her again. I don't think I watched any of the videos from the Joanne era and Stupid Love was imperfect but it was nice to see Gaga try new things again. Rain on Me bored me though and her announcing and selling tickets to a tour mid-pandemic felt really naïve and tone-deaf at the time, but it was awesome for her to organise her benefit concert after that when the pandemic didn't go away. 911 was a great video. I actually liked Chromatica but it was no Born This Way. And I thought it was a shame they had such a great visual concept and aesthetic with the pulp style graphics and the tribes and everything but none of that really got explored properly and that was a huge disappointment.

L4S was very underwhelming. DWAS also did not grab me.

Then Harlequin happened and I was a bit excited again. And then when Disease came out, I was back onboard. And the rest is history!

Listen to Million Reasons (Album Version) and Angel Down (Album Version). Then listen to the Work Tape versions. The difference is very obvious. :)
