Ultimecia 6,072
No other artist in the world can pull off a song like Abracadabra, this is undeniable. In my opinion, songs like Disease, Perfect Celebrity and Zombieboy to an extent also possess that "Gaga flair." As much as I love every other song on MAYHEM, they are by no means unique. It doesn't take away from the stellar quality of the material, but is worth addressing. Time. It will not wait, no matter how hard you hold on... It doesn't take away from the stellar quality of the material, but is worth addressing. IMO, uniqueness in art is overrated. To me the vehicle (Gaga) is just as important as the songs themselves. You could argue that songs like Don't call tonight or Shadow of a Man are derivative of Tina Turner and Michael Jackson respectively. Yet at the end of the day, Gaga is the one delivering them, and that alone gives them her distinctive flair. Her vocal style and enunciation are unmistakably her own. I think the same applies to her jazz material. Yes, these are classics that aren’t “unique” in themselves, but Gaga doesn’t sing Lush Life the way Ella Fitzgerald does. The uniqueness lies in the delivery, and that’s why we’re fans: Gaga is a channel through which the music expresses itself, and it’s that channel we’ve come to love most of all. We could wish for more experimentation in her production choices (i think Mayhem is full of experimental moments but they are more subtle than say, ARTPOP). But that's not how she creates. She never set out to be "different". She IS different. Her point of view is authentic no matter what she's exploring.
Controversiaga 11,731
Yes I agree. Abracadabra is the only song on the album that blew me away. Disease is great also, but the rest are underwhelming to me personally and I am a huge fan of synth pop and dance pop Pronounced like “Balenciaga” . Emphasis on the “Ga”
dubstep111 676
I agree! The album just goes downhill after perfect celebrity.

Nycboy 1,126
Add: KFL, CSTH, Happy Mistake. Remove: Blade of Grass, The Beast, DWAS Then it would be AOTY and cohesive. I wonder if that was the original intention before she tacked on DWAS and renamed the album from Perfect Celebrity to Mayhem (mayhem accounting for the new genre shifts). She loves Blade Of Grass and The Beats fits the themes of the album perfectly. Happy Mistake is a Chromatica reject. And she said Perfect Celebrity was a working title, not meant to be the official one. In fact, MAYHEM wasn’t as chaotic until she came up with Disease snd PC (song) very late in the process. I love Happy Mistake just as much as everybody else and it’s included in my MAYHEM playlist but imo it was never meant to be there. She considers Harlequin to be just as important as her other solo studio albums and Happy Mistake was intentionally put there. Drop it
mightyriverz 2,652
asking for 14 songs sounding like eachother tells me someone has not much diversity when it comes to musical input or creativity.

Morphine Prince 106,905
I agree which is why I only listen to around half of this album and consider it an EP to mask the disappointment.

palma 8,463
Gays are such a fickle audience MAYHEM is a masterpiece and encapsulates Gaga as an artist as much as TFM and BTW did. It only relates a more mature artist (that is in her prime imo). EDIT: Also I hate that Blade of Grass is almost always scrutinized. Let the woman have ONE SONG about her relationship on the album that was made in collaboration with her loved one. It's the only song I cried while listening on my first play of the album. Aren't super fans supposed to appreciate the reflections on her personal journey? It's not even a bad song let alone the subject matter. Edited September 24 by palma Is there some reason my LG7 isn't here? Has she died or something?
