It didn’t work for me. I opened Spotify on my phone, tried to play a song, and it immediately started shuffling. Before the music even began, I had to sit through over 15 minutes of ads about how life-changing it is that you can “instantly play any song” on free Spotify. I got so irritated that I renewed my Apple Music subscription for the next 1,000 years, just to guarantee that not only my children, but also their children, and their great-great-great-grandchildren are legally bound to Apple Music until the end of civilization.

I never understood Spotify to begin with. I have a family sub for AM which is 16€/month. Put my best friend, my ex and my parents on it. Totally worth it. I just wished they merge Podcasts and AM into one

It's really just that ads are profitable enough and they want to keep free users engaged more often to run them more ads. Plus increased engagement, even from free users, gives them more leverage when negotiating with labels. Funnily enough contracts with all 3 majors were extended this year, and it would not surprise me if payouts were determined by engagement and free/paid user ratios. 

From Spotify's VP of Markets and Subscriptions:

He explained that the increased free engagement will be “a boon for our advertising business” due to the “increased free audience, as well as more time spent on the platform for free users, and also more focused time spent for free users – because you can go in and pick your songs and so on”.

Gyllenhammar added: “We can now have much higher-performing advertising units for our users. So we also feel strongly that this should be something that can drive accelerated profitability and revenue generation on the free tier from advertisers. That’s another part of why this move is important for us.”

Ok good for people who don't pay for Spotify premium. But what's the difference between free and premium, then? Like why should I keep playing 12€ every month? Lol I don't get it
