Only time will tell (and Trump’s fickle nature does Putin no favors), but I still don’t know if I agree that Ukraine falls. Ukraine has no satellite surveillance on its own, it relies on foreign intelligence and without Western weapon deliveries, Russia would have advanced much further by now. After 2014, Ukraine received weapon deliveries on a larger scale, so by 2022 it was not totally unprepared. I continue to view the world as divided into spheres of influence and interpret it accordingly. The USA claims the Americas, including Venezuela and distant Pacific islands and the surrounding oceans; Russia claims parts of the former Soviet Union; and China claims the South China Sea and Taiwan. Even though the West repeatedly emphasizes that Ukraine will now become part of the West, and the West repeatedly stresses that Russia has no legal claim to it, the West tacitly acknowledges that Ukraine is indeed part of the Russian sphere of influence. Otherwise, they would have sent it "powerful, modern" weapons - instead, they limit themselves to sending Ukraine outdated weapons and occasionally some new, modern ones. The West will continue to support Ukraine militarily, but always in such a way that Russia remains on the rise. The West is not concerned with Ukraine's survival and well-being; rather, it is using Ukraine to destroy Russia - at least, that's what I believe. Because direct destruction of Russia is not possible, it is happening indirectly through Ukraine. But Russia, with its nuclear weapons and China's support, cannot be defeated in this war now. The Ukrainians are being given false promises. How often was it said in 2023 that Russia would be defeated by 2024 - far too often – it merely served to motivate the Ukrainians to stop them from fleeing, because the West doesn't want to send soldiers on their own. Therefore, fleeing to the West is not a bad idea and I agree with @Economy's rationale. Certainly, countries like the Baltic states genuinely want to support Ukraine, but these Baltic states are weak, and the peripheral countries of Europe – further away from Russia – like Spain or Italy, do not want to fight against Russia and do not perceive it as such a threat as Lithuania. Macron also talks a lot, but provides little of modern, powerful weapons to Ukraine – France keeps those for itself. Now that Trump has invaded Venezuela, the US is losing a moral argument against Russia, but also against China. Since Taiwan is not an independent country under UN law, and the US itself invades countries in modern times, China may feel more emboldened to do the same and get away with it. The West can then condemn this and respond with arms deliveries, but China can then retaliate with attacks on the West – and the West will then tacitly acknowledge that Taiwan is indeed China's sphere of influence and refrain from further involvement, even if it always publicly claims otherwise. What more evidence do you need? Naturally, the remaining politicians will now cooperate with the US - out of fear that they will be removed from office if they don't, as happened with Maduro. They have no real choice: cooperate or be removed. The US has already replaced many leaders. Venezuela is now (indirectly) ruled by the USA. They also couldn’t even get Maduro without messing that up since they quite literally just pulled him out like some high intensity stunt and not the delicate geopolitical nightmare that simply plucking a head of state out of power is. Like his entire government is still there? And the military?? I have extreme doubts any more of this goes smoothly bc every time they do something they celebrate, the ramifications blow up in their faces in 3-5 business days. Ayesha Erotica 1,963
After I was accused of not providing any evidence for this theory, evidence has now been leaked: Russia made this offer to the US. At the time, they were not interested. After the Alaska meeting, this may have changed. It is not known whether Trump accepted, but it seems logical. It is suspicious that Russia's condemnation is relatively mild. It also appears that Russia's secret service did not warn Venezuela in advance. Evidence: "How much truth is there behind the speculation? In 2019, Fiona Hill, a former National Security Council (NSC) director for Russia, testified before Congress that Russian officials had floated a “very strange swap arrangement between Venezuela and Ukraine.” As the moderate Russian voice Sergey Brilyov now leads coverage of the Venezuela strikes on state media, observers can only wonder if the rapport established during the Trump-Putin Alaska summit in 2025 has finally yielded a backstage deal." https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/why-is-the-kremlin-quiet-on-venezuela Russia Once Offered U.S. Control of Venezuela for Free Rein in Ukraine: Full Text in Spoiler from New York Times: Spoiler Russia Once Offered U.S. Control of Venezuela for Free Rein in Ukraine Neil MacFarquhar ~4 Minuten The exchange offer was recounted at the time in congressional testimony by Fiona Hill, who ran Russian and European affairs on the National Security Council during the first Trump administration. At the time, Russia signaled that it was willing to allow the United States to act as it pleased in Venezuela, in exchange for Washington giving the Kremlin a free hand in Ukraine, according to Congressional testimony from Fiona Hill, who ran Russian and European affairs on the National Security Council during the first Trump administration. The Russians “were signaling very strongly that they wanted to somehow make some very strange swap arrangement between Venezuela and Ukraine,” Ms. Hill told a Congressional hearing in October 2019, more than two years before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The proposals were informal, through commentators and newspaper articles, she said, but the gist was that if the United States wanted the freedom to maintain a sphere of influence over neighboring countries, then it ought to agree to Russia doing the same. “You want us out of your backyard,” said Ms. Hill in summarizing the Russian position. “We, you know, we have our own version of this. You’re in our backyard in Ukraine.” Ms. Hill said that she went to Moscow in person to reject the idea. The proposal came amid tensions between Caracas and Washington that prompted Moscow to deploy 100 military personnel and new weapons to shore up the rule of President Nicolás Maduro. Mr. Maduro’s removal marks the latest blow to a regime supported by Moscow, with President Bashar al-Assad of Syria toppled a little over a year ago. Officially, the Russian foreign ministry condemned the move as a violation of international law. But the main Russian priority is the war in Ukraine, where the Trump administration is trying to negotiate peace. The Kremlin is trying to strike a difficult balance, neither making any major concessions on Ukraine nor alienating the White House. Some senior Russian officials and commentators have expressed satisfaction that the United States seemed to be ditching international law in exchange for a policy of “might makes right,” an attitude hearkening back to an imperial era, more than a century ago, that both President Trump and President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia have looked on fondly. “The law of the strongest is clearly stronger than ordinary justice,” Dmitri Medvedev, the formerly liberal president of Russia turned war hawk wrote on social media, while adding in an interview with the official Tass news agency that Washington now has “no grounds, even formally, to reproach our country.” Neil MacFarquhar has been a Times reporter since 1995, writing about a range of topics from war to politics to the arts, both internationally and in the United States. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/06/world/americas/russia-us-venezuela-ukraine.html Trump's former Russia adviser says Russia offered US free rein in Venezuela in exchange for Ukraine https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/trumps-former-russia-adviser-russia-offered-us-free-128961387 "Hill said Russia pushed the idea through articles in Russian media that referenced the Monroe Doctrine — a 19th century principle in which the U.S. opposed European meddling in the Western Hemisphere and in return agreed to stay out of European affairs. It was invoked by Trump to justify the U.S. intervention in Venezuela."
