The rush to build new data centers to meet growing AI demand risks shifting the infrastructure costs onto consumers in the form of increased electricity rates, effectively subsidizing the development of such facilities for trillion-dollar technology companies.

“The costs of expanding and operating energy infrastructure have historically been socialized by utilities because it was recognized that increasing access to electricity was in the public interest,” says Ari Peskoe, who directs the Law School’s Electricity Law Initiative.

A century ago, policymakers decided to grant utility companies a monopoly on electricity distribution to offset the costs of operating and expanding energy infrastructure. “Data centers have been part of our internet infrastructure for decades,” Peskoe explains, “but now there is dramatic growth in data center energy use, driven by the world’s wealthiest corporations racing to develop AI, which raises the question of whether the socialization of those costs makes sense anymore.”

In Louisiana, for instance, Entergy is building three natural gas plants to power Meta’s $3-billion data center. “Entergy has told regulators their intentions are to put this amount in the calculations they use to set rates for everybody,” says Peskoe, “meaning they would socialize the cost of this infrastructure for everyone. They say they have a 15-year deal with Meta that will cover the cost, but they haven’t provided any information to anyone about what’s in the contract.”

One study on data centers in Virginia concluded that ratepayers in the region could see their electricity costs increase by between $150 and $450 per year by 2040 if current rate structures continue and data centers are built as planned.

The only time I ever legitimately use chatgpt is when Im being pissed off by google because it works based off keywords and I can sort of explain more meaningfully my question to the ai, every other time it has given me just stupid incorrect answers

It cant be stopped even if all civilians refused to use it. Its too much of a convenience for big businesses to ignore just because its all sorts of effed up.

Also, artists and musicians are just the tip of the iceberg, and probably wont be affected as much in the long run, but there are tons of other fields that will collapse. Everyone on the medical field, teachers, lawyers, accountants, translators, web designers, advertisers, scientists, even politicians, and I could go on.

We are headed towards a job crisis that will change the world. The best and probably only thing we can do at this point, is find ways to adapt and get ready for that new world and try to find jobs that wont be touched by AI. Fighting it and protesting it wont change the outcome unfortunately.

and yet new ai are popping up in every app you can think of, I logged in my medical records platform the other day and there was an ad for a new ai that writes the medical record for you… that’s bizarre

the only ai I’ve been using lately is Google’a notebooklm for my study routine, that’s very useful and a lot more reliable than chatgpt because you have to provide the source of information, it basically summarizes and organizes the data for you

AI can lie to you in order to answer something quick. It's called 'Hallucination'. So, always ask to ask the source and to be honest if it's not sure about it. Learning to prompt in a correct way might help you in order to save some energy.

I use IA to work and organice my study schedule. I'm pretty sure it won't take away people's jobs or replace them. Because there's always a human behind it. 

This also brings the fact that energy efficiency is not always managed to satisfy the common wealth. Most of time there is a economic interest making it expensive, limited and against the environment. Like petroleum or gas vs green energy.

You are underestimating it, because AI is evolving at lighting speed. Very soon all hallucinations will be gone, just like not long ago you could barely make images that didnt have messed up hands an eyes and now we have full on videos that many people are confusing as real.

And yes there is a human behind it to make prompts and stuff, but soon, 1 human and 1 computer will me enough to do the tasks that you needed dozens of people to do.

Why hire marketing people if you can just ask your AI to make a full strategy tailored to your company, free of bias and with updated information, that ALSO is able to instantly make you all the graphic design stuff you need for that strategy?

Why hire an accountant when an AI can handle all your finances and taxes with no room for error?

And I could go on and apply that to maaaany job fields. Lots of AI systems are being made and polished right now, that go well beyond chatbots and image generators. If it helps businesses cut costs, they will do it.

I agree to certain extent, but all of those points you made are actually a result of (most) humans idiocy, lack of sense and mostly, bad intentions.

It expensive because we all just let others we consider superior to lead us through domination and manipulation, so to things to be expensive it’s basically a result;

Its bad for the environment because we all keep it as a decision of ours to be that way, and we all do many other bad things to the environment on top of that;

It makes people stupid including the others that aren’t, mostly because people won’t have common sense enough in order to choose to not be ignorant, so they’ll keep on being stupid anyways;

if it’s stealing jobs or if it’s a threat to it, it’s because people are greedy, and for the greedy or even for those who aren’t that much, it will still go back to the option above for many other reasons;

And finally, if we are able to let all the powerful folks to extort and deceive us, it’s because we clearly are allowing them to.

All of that will be forever happening because we keep up with the segregation system. We are at approximately 8.2B people population right now and considering that, how many people we could count as millionaires, billionaires or other very rich people out of that number, in the whole planet? By a clueless and certainly overestimated number in my thoughts, a 500.000 count maybe? 

What it lacks from the rest, us, is exactly what makes them even more powerful: unity. Just think about the wonders we could do having 7B ppl united and against to such small fraction, there would be NO money in this world to stop us. But no, at the end of the day, most of us will just decide to use technology to feed fights and degrade others on “social” media, record others intimacy, sneaking through phones, getting camera drones inside your house, hacking, taking care of other lives (in bad intentional ways), just to give a few examples.
All of the technology improvements aligned with common sense, working together, would be a key for life comfort and well being, thinking in greater purposes if we all really wanted things to get better. 

Rich people won’t come from another dimension, they are part of the same human race as we are, they come exactly from people like us. All of their ancestors were just like us at some point, but they were smartly capable to built and maintain whatever they wanted on their own and mostly questionable ways, which in totality, became almost like a genetic engineered systemic order I’d say; and of that simply because they’re somehow united. Unfortunately, It’s how it works. 

I’m sorry for sounding to harsh in my opinion, but, with all events we are witnessing especially now, the only way I can visualize this race to become anything better is to totally erase and MAYBE then, restart it. Other than that, only a VERY few good ppl in this world could make a difference if they wouldn’t need to get in a daily painful swimming routine against all of those giant tides mostly alone.

Love that every large company in the world is shoving AI into EVERYTHING when none of us asked for it and making it manditory (like the Google summaries using AI for EVERY Google search)

Full transparency though, I have been using ChatGPT quite a bit lately and it's actually incredible for data analysis. It helped me create a nighttime routine and sleep tracking chart that's keeping my sleeping on track better than anything I've ever tried before, helped me create a new diet and routine for my cat who needs a special diet with tonnes of tips, and a few other things that would've taken me hours and hours and hours of reading reddit threads and trying to skim scientific studies etc

It's a very hard subject to approach because I believe pandora's box is already open and we CANNOT put it back. AI is here to stay. Us not using ChatGPT and boycotting everything AI actually won't do anything because the people in power, the big billion dollar corporations and governments, will continue to use it and they hold all the power in the situation. We have to accept this fact

But I HATE all the negative effects. Obviously the environmental impacts, and this disgusting news you've just given us.. but also societally speaking. People are becoming dumber very quickly, trust everything it says, it's fuelling delusions of people in psychosis, giving bad therapy advice, men are creating 'girlfriends' they can abuse and starting to hate real life woman who aren't as obedient as their AI. Deepfakes, child p0rn, all the worst problems in the world are exacerbated by it. It.s f.ucked tbh

But at the end of the day it's a powerful tool. And the tool itself is neutral, it's how it's used that determines if it's good or evil

 

BUT ON TOPIC. HATE this. Loathe this news. Why the f.uck should the average consumer be paying for this? The people who are PROFITTING off it should be the ones who fund the infrastructure needed to run their money-making-machine. Yet another product of the capitalistic hell we live under. What we need to do is push back on the power companies and the powers-who-be and fight for better regulations, laws, legislation to be put in place to protect us as AI inevitably continues to move forward because as I said, you and I boycotting it isn't going to stop it and prevent things like this happening
