I vow 1000% tariffs on Trump’s spray tan imports — effective immediately to protect national orange reserves.

So next year's smartphone just got even more expensive...People will be deciding whether to pay rent or get a new phone :saladga:

I don't agree with tariffs but buying the latest phone has always been a luxury, there's so many previous versions to choose from which get cheaper on each release

Well, Intel cant make anything of value anymore, their new fabs are even cancelled afaik.

90% of modern chips are made by TSMC, global foundry etc This means American consumers are about pay a pretty penny for CPU's, GPU's and other stuff like chips that go in cars etc.. This also affects consoles and smartphones.

America does have companies like Qualcomm but they are fabless and intel is... intel. :franminervini:

TSMC has said that they will be exempt from tariffs bc they’re building a plant in Arizona but the orange man will probably want more investments from them…

But specifics about the plan, such as how much U.S. manufacturing a company needs to do in order to qualify for the tariff exemption, were not immediately clear.

Typical of Trump. Its always half a plan than has to change or be delayed  because the plan has no specifics :rip:

Remember wheb tarrifs were delayed a week the first time cuz the border customs workers received no instructions on how to process the tarrifs :air:

lol this hurts America more than it hurts anyone, America is still at least a decade away from setting up chip factories that can rival Taiwan’s. Good luck with booking that economy you speak of

Whats dumb is the USA already exceels at its own sectors and its trying to chase less productive sectors in its place. Finance, Services, digital designing, software programming etc. Add in entertainment dominace if u wish, the US exports hundreds of billions worth of these annually

The US did not get such high productivity and high GDP per capita with just retail and fast food alone despite some (falsely) claiming thats all the US has left because of trade

The US trade deficit with the world is actually not that bad if these aspects of trade are not cherry picked excluded from the numbers as Trump always does

The entire developed world has lost manufacturing jobs not just the US. He needs to get over it. Rather than trying to return to a 1970 economy embrace what you have done well in and make adjustments so it can benefit everyone

For example these sectors i mentioned the US does extremely well in (and exports a lot of)... it has made silicon valley extremely rich and with more fair progressive taxes a lot of wealth could benefit ordinary americans

The issue isnt that the US isnt producing wealth with exports. The issue is that wealth is not being distributed properly and its staying in the top 2% or the stock market.

Its easier to fix the challanges of spreading the concentrated wealth created from the digital economy than it is to try and gain manufacturing back from low income Countries with methods (ie tarrifs) that even if auccessful to a degree come with their own drawbacks

Can JD Vance just get on with his palace coup please ? He will be a terrible President, but he isn't nuts, he's just a standard-issue weasel. Trump, on the other hand, IS nuts. A move to a standard-issue weasel would be a small step in the right direction.

I agree u dont have to buy the newest model (i usually never do as its too expensive)

But remember this will ultimately raise the price on older models too so being more frugal that way wont let u dodge the tarrifs for long if they stay

Older models will still be imported and their cheaper so the extra demand from ppl flocking to cheaper alternatives because new phones are too expensive will raise their prices even more

I wouldnt be surprised if the price gap between new models and older ones shrank as a result

that's true I didn't realise if Apple and Samsung still continued to manufacture older models when new ones were released or if it was just limited stock at that point partly at retailers already in the country. But I don't get tariffs in the first place, I'm in the UK and paid probably a couple thousand in import duty over the years it's ridiculous and phones cost more here than if I bought the same model in USA

yeah, other nations leaders could have more contested the narrative spread by Trump but they did not and allowed Trump to fabricate the myth of US being cheated in global trade, although all in all it is balanced and US has even monopolies in some sectors

And now this myth has become accepted and other leaders are willing to deal

Only China and Russia had the courage to stand up and countersanction immediately

Other nations did not have the balls

It has been embarassing how Ursula von der Leyen/EU agreed to Trump's deal and took back tariffs to 2,5% while USA was allowed to get 15%. Trump successfully suceeded in blackmailing the EU

Even the UK made a better deal than the EU
