This is only problematic if you search for it. At the end of the day it's simply an American Eagle ad...like are we really discussing this as being Nazi rhetoric? Sometimes (believe it or not) things are created to just send a simple message...like selling jeans. I think people are thinking way to deep about this - lets move on and actually care about the world's problems.

i don't think it would be as big of an issue if the US/world wasn't in the state it's in, with the president it has and if the actress they used was not blonde hair and blue eyed

The White House is now defending this ad.

Says it all!

I miss the 2000s when people weren't offended by literally everything

We also didn't have multiple fascist political leaders in significant positions of power being bankrolled by billionaires.

To put it in gay terms. We're at the half way point of Cabaret.

The Emcee has started appearing with random bruises. The costumes are getting darker. The venue getting grimey. The gorilla is just a funny gag and nothing insidious. This is still just a story about a cabaret club isnt it? There's nothing to worry about is there?

Are we going to pretend that "having good genes" isn't a common saying to refer to attractive people? Sydney's brand for the past two years has been based around the fact that she's beautiful - every time I hear about her, it's because of this, rather than her acting career. She was the ideal person for this ad.

This has got me questioning your tagline, ngl.

Maybe she didn't write the script for the ad, but like idk.. critical thinking? she could have say something or decline doing this ad?

She's not stupid, she's supposed to be a strong independent woman and all that.. so she could  do 1+1 and get the bad message of this ad.. but she didn't or she did but didn't give a f-ck about it. the money was more important.

The “If You Could See Her” analogy here is spot on

Also for folks seeing the comparisons to Nazi propaganda and going "dont be so dramatic".

Do you think Nazi propaganda was all about promoting antisemitic violence?

If so, you are massively undereducated on the subject.

Nazi propaganda was about convincing the German people that the Nazis were the solution to societal issues. It was about presenting the "perfect face of Germany".

It was the offer of work and bread to the masses following a massive economic collapse.

It was about promoting an idealistic german future.

It was so much more than just hook nosed goblins hoarding money.

also the "blue" in the ad is very similar to how the nazi saw the blue eyes as one of the Aryan traits

To people familiar with the concept of eugenics and the rise of fascism, this ad is pretty plainly dogwhistling. No need to search for it. That's why the criticism happened so quickly and widely.

Advertisements using similar concepts also started popping up with the rise of Hitler's party. This isn't new territory so people who bother to read the guidebook are quick to pick up on the steps we're reaching. Yeah, it's an advertisement for jeans. But it's an advertisement following trends to sell better and the current trend is white people talking about how good their genetic makeup is. That's a world problem we shouldn't be moving on from. We've been moving on from a lot of things to focus on other problems for years and look where we've ended up so far.

This is my Hannah Montana™️ lipgloss.

dude I'm all for pointing out actual dogwhistles, but this is a massive stretch. it's not that deep. the joke is that she's a hot blonde with big naturals and that she has great "genes" for making her so hot. this pun has been done so many times. is it brilliant advertising? no. but it's not saying "she is hot and better because she's white", it's just saying she's hot

also the company was founded by two jewish men (the Silverman brothers), and the CEO Jay Schottenstein is also jewish. I DOUBT any of them would be like "okay yeah lets put some nazi-ism into our ads"

it's not that deep. people can stretch anything they want into portraying something awful, and I think that can be detrimental when it comes to pointing out actual, intentional dogwhistling (which I don't think this is)

edit: btw I have a college degree in Marketing in case anyone wants to call me delusional etc
