Mirrion Rizzons 11,009
Been watching some interesting videos regarding 2025 and the lack of meaningful pop music releases, which sorta comes as no surprise due to 2024 being a major major year for A-list pop. Meanwhile, this year most hits have been country-leaning, or singer/songwriter vibes, which got me thinking, is pop about to enter into another drought, like in the late 2010s when we saw Hip Hop become the dominant genre? Interestingly though, Hip Hop consumption has actually seen one of the sharpest declines in recent years compared to other genres, with pop being relatively stable, and an increase in country's popularity. So with regard to 2025, is it just a resting year for the MPG's, or is this a sign that pop may fall into the background again, like in the mid to late 2010s? As we know, Doja is returning soon with a very 80s pop inspired record, and we're all waiting for Olivia Rodrigo's next era, although she's carved a more alternative sound, rather than 'traditional pop'. I do remember around 2015 I started to notice that pop was becoming more stale, which coincided with the cultural shift to other genres becoming more popular, like R&B and Hip Hop at the time. Similarly, the mid 2000s also saw somewhat of a pop drought (although less obvious), which wasn't really bought back until stars like Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas came through with their respective albums. Will pop face a similar fate for the next few years, as per the cycle of music tastes and consumption? 2
Controversiaga 11,196
The fact that DWAS out performed Abracadabra is all the confirmation we need that pop has BEEN dead meanwhile Sabrina carpenter is what ppl want to listen to??????? Teletubby 149,377
It might hibernate from time to time, and sink back into the swamp. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands it adheres to some of its rules. But it's always waiting there, just around the corner. Ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that pop music, it seems like it's faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there's nothing you can do about it. "You b*tch!" ~ Rat Boy 4

Make it make sense Drag me but no one can convince me DWAS' success was 100% authentic. Even speaking with Gaga's core base (here and elsewhere) majority weren't streaming that song past Oct or Nov. Luckily, it served as the perfect cushion for the JFAD reception. But unfortunately drowned Disease and any potential success for that song. True pop will never die. We're just in a nostalgia resurgence right now with everything from music to movies, shows, fashion, etc. With that said, I'm hoping the success and impact Abra did have on pop culture shows Gaga what fans want right now.
Taumaturg0 557
OT: no, it will shift, pop music is an extremely ill defined term that applies to popular mainstream music in general. Also, can we stop acting like music genres mean anyhting outside marketing ? they're just a way of segmenting target audiences

TheMontebello 467
It has never died... Mainstream pop dips in quality quite often but it doesn't die. You like the fat girl I got in me 🍕

ImMatt 1,778
I doubt it. This same thing happened in 2012 after so many major pop artists had released in 2011 (Gaga, Beyonce, Britney...) and then again in 2013 (Gaga, Katy, Miley, Beyonce). The year in between was pretty fallow from a pop perspective. This year has had big artists release (Lorde, The Weeknd, Gaga, Bad Bunny), but the problem is no one has had sustained impact on the mainstream with those albums. The closest is probably Gaga.
