I'm reading some comments in this thread, and I want to say this:

All of Lady Gagas lead singles have been high risk to some degree, and that's okay honestly.

Just Dance was an unapologetically european electropop song released in the middle of a huge dominance of R&B/Hip-Hop. Even Colby O'Donnis' verse couldn't prevent getting the song to play on radio from being a colossal uphill battle.

Bad Romance sounded almost nothing like anything else out in late 2009. The very aggressive vocals (especially during the verses) were very much so against the trend of simpler and higher-toned pop vocals.

Born This Ways unapologetic acceptance of different marginalized communities was high-risk at a time when they could've (and did) made people look at Lady Gaga negatively, but she (thankfully) took the risk.

Applause was a brazen (and much needed) slap in the face to anyone who wanted Lady Gaga to tone down who she was in 2013 and "stop being attention seeking". Plus, the lyrics are almost entirely unrelatable to the average person (save for performers) which also made it high risk.

Perfect Illusion was a (literally) Tame Impala inspired rock/80s throwback song released in the middle of the Tropical Pop/experimental Hip-Hop and R&B trend. Need I saw more?

Stupid Love was an unapologetic return to the loud and cvnty dance music Lady Gaga had been making at the beginning of her career. Yes there was Don't Start Now and Blinding Lights, but this was a step further. It was even high risk considering the fact that many people misinterpreted the meaning of A Star is Born.

Disease is a very dark and aggressive song released in the midst of TikToks very unpredictable algorithm of making songs viral, and it was also released in the middle of the ongoing Soft Rock/Disco inspired trend.

None of Lady Gagas lead singles have been truly low-risk, and that's why I love her. She and Interscope have rarely every kissed up to what people wanted from her, and she should continue to do so.

Both Stupid Love and Replay are terrible lead single choices. :bear: Only Alice and Babylon are great, maybe Free Woman would've been ok too.

If we’re going to rehash the Chromatica era it should’ve gone:

Stupid Love- Spring

Rain On Me- Summer

Replay-Fall

Sour Candy- Valentines/Spring 2021

Free Woman Ft. Rina- Summer 2021

Plastic Doll/Fun Tonight/911 remixes as US/LA/EU regional only singles- August 2021

If there weren’t any Dawn of Chromatica singles then Free Woman should’ve been lead. Free Woman, Fun Tonight, and Replay were the most single friendly tracks ignoring Rain On Me and Sour Candy. I personally don’t hear what others hear in Alice.

It was, simply because it leaked months before release... Without the leak it might've been #1 and done better overall, but it should've been scrapped after the leak. :madge:

would have been way too late to switch and a huge waste of money

Why? The video was shot after the whole song was leaked, and honestly for what it was, they could’ve improvized something else 💀

The video might have been shot after, but they had already spent money on rehearsals, costumes, set, art, promo deals, etc.. I’m sure the Apple/iPhone deal especially wouldn’t have been particularly easy to change or delay

On this Chromatica talk, y’all really love to erase that the pandemic kept people from going to the clubs and being together, which was probably a huge catalyst for Abra’s success and longevity

Love this - but there is also the fact that newer artists have more freedom to take risks. More people will tune in out of natural interest vs. more established artists. I think a good strategy moving forward is setting the stage with crowd pleasers, alongside subsequent singles that may challenge the basics a bit more. I think she/Interscope already know this (they released DWAS weeks before Disease), and then another experimental single with Debra after. She has this nice ying/yang going for her with her artistry. I would say (aside from VIY not being a single -yet-), the biggest miss is GOE not being Single #1 or #2. Perfect mix of sweet pop perfection with Gaga's kooky touch.
