Emigration from Italy threatens Italy's demographic prospects

Italian authorities are becoming increasingly concerned about the growing number of Romanians returning to their home country. In 2024 alone, more than 35,000 Romanians left Italy to go back to Romania—around 3.3% of the 1.07 million Romanian residents in the country. This reverse migration trend poses a challenge to Italy, which is already grappling with a long-term population decline. 

One of the main drivers behind the Romanian exodus is the significant improvement in Romania’s economic conditions. Over the past five years, the average gross salary in Romania has nearly doubled, rising from €955 in 2019 to €1,850 in 2024. Meanwhile, Italy’s average salary has remained almost stagnant, only increasing by €100 to reach €2,700. 

Other European countries have experienced similar patterns of reverse migration. In the UK, for example, the number of Polish residents fell sharply from over one million in 2016 to 600,000 by 2021, with Brexit being a key factor. Likewise, Romanian and Bulgarian net migration flows dropped by 40% in the first five years after Brexit.

Romania's rapid economic growth—second only to China since 2000 in terms of GDP per capita increase—has made it increasingly attractive for its citizens to return. The EU accession played a significant role in this transformation. In contrast, destination countries like Italy and Spain have faced economic stagnation, especially after the 2008 financial crisis. Additionally, growing nationalist and anti-immigration sentiment in Western Europe has led many Eastern European migrants to question their long-term prospects abroad.

I know logic would dictate that ppl are purely motivated by economic stuff and so the go to answer is probably that because Romani's economy is improving ppl want to move back but I feel like that paired with the DEEP seated resentment towards immigrants (including white eastern europeans) has also played a big factor in this...The way ppl in much of Western Europe speak of immigrants has really become frightening and I am seeing A LOT of ppl talking about doing a new / modern holocaust but of (mostly Muslim) people all across Europe...it;s scary AF and knowing how oppresion works, if they do eventually cross the rubicon and start doing something horrible to muslim immigrants it only takes a little step to then start doing it to other migrants even white ones or other oppressed or disenfranchised groups. 

I know lots of ppl will think these things are hyperbolic but I know a lot of ppl who are LGBTQ, muslims, immigrants of all sorts etc who are TRULY starting to panic about the state of Western norms and values at the moment. I think the Gaza genocide has woken even some of the most purist believers in western values and international laws and morals and made them realize that all of that which they took for granted is only held up if ppl are willing to enforce it and right now the wave of right wing nationalism isnt willing to enforce even basic human rights laws so the step into legit extreme levels of pure violence against groups these ppl dislike arent that far off or far away if this wave keeps on growing and gaining momentum....

Like dit said, western Europe is quickly being known for how unfriendly it is to immigrants so if people are seeing their home nations improve why wouldn't they return?

Western nations (UK/France/Germany/Italy etc) have spent the best part of a decade since the 2008 crash demonizing eastern european immigrants and telling them to go home. 

And now they're going home all of them are going "wait we cant survive without exploiting your willingness to work in substandard conditions".

And they are now busy demonising the people coming into replace these immigrants returning home who are likewise prepared to work shitty hours and in near illegal conditions to scrape by.
