why are they even moving to a western country?

Probably 'cause a western country is blowing theirs up :bear:

Lastly, if people (like many liberals for exmaple) are okay with muslim countries banning bikinis, shorts, t-shirts etc in the name of "modesty" or "respecting cultural values" etc, then why can't the West do the same? It can't work one way but not the other. That's a double standard

I don't know that anyone here would be ok with this.

Bans are largely ineffective and often counterproductive. Prohibition simply doesn't work without causing either mass misery or mass corruption.

I agree, but at the same time there are plenty of safe Muslim countries with similar beliefs, laws etc to go to. Turkey is a great example. Saudi Arabia, UAE, Algeria, Morocco are others. But somehow so many end up in a western country protesting in mass outside a school raising the pride flag    (I’m a high school teacher in Canada so I can speak on this and see it every year).

Many western countries have already put bans and I think majority of people in western countries would be fine with a burqa ban. Especially as right-wing parties are gaining ground.

I mean, my counter argument would be that there are plenty of homegrown dumbasses. I see no difference between a native being a bigoted prick and an immigrant being a bigoted prick. The solution to both is the same: show them how wrong they are, counter protest them, maybe start a dialogue, at least make sure you're voting for politicians that'll protect the people you care about.

This is actively a point against the bans :laughga:

I don't think a majority of people really care if women do or don't wear headdresses and even if they did, "the majority" isn't always right.

And this...idk, maybe it's 'cause I'm American but this dead ass sounds like an argument for segregation.

"Go be with your own kind, we don't want you here"

I know that's not your intention but it's definitely a stepping stone to some dark stuff :rip:

Turkey is a great example. In fact, in the years 2014 to 2019, Turkey recieved the highest number of registered refugees from any country or territory. And until 2024, Turkey had the largest refugee population in the world at 3.2million (majority being Syrian refugees). It's been overtaken by Iran which hosts 3.7 million now as of the mid 2024 stats (with the majority of those being a result of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Syrian civil war).

In fact, only 1 western nation had over 1 million refugees as of mid 2024. Germany, hosting 2.6 million.

Based on the information I can find for Canada, which is for 2024, the total number of non-permanent residents in Canada (so refugees/asylum seekers or other similar statuses) is 457,285.

So yeah they are primarily, and in significantly larger numbers, fleeing to neighbouring nations with similar cultures.

Perfect. More countries need to do the same. Sorry not sorry!

I don't think that it should be enforced that women have to wear a face covering. But they should have the choice to if they wish. There are many Muslim women out there who are not required to wear one but they prefer to do so.

Something has to be done to give dignity to women who deserve it even if it looks like an obligation at first.

So the way to give dignity to women is to make laws telling them what they can and cannot wear. Right.

I honestly really don’t give a f-ck, I will not fight for homophobic people anymore, they are not the victims in this story, they are just another oppressors.

It's not all about us. Queer people are not the main characters in every social conflict.

I just can't understand how do you guys not agree that it's a good thing.

Because there are plenty of women who do it by informed choice.

You assume that every single woman in the country who wears a covering does it because they are forced to or have been brain washed into thinking they're choosing to, but that ins't the case. There are plenty of people in the country, and indeed all over the world, who are well aware of the choice that they are making, but they make it because they believe in their faith.

You all are marching through this thread taking the stance that these women are apparently so uneducated that they are incapable of having a single original thought.

This but I'd also like to point out something I just thought of...

Anti-Islam/Muslim people here in this thread are doing the most to basically say Muslims should stay in their countries or abandon their cultures, whatever, saying women are deeply oppressed 'cause they have to/choose to wear head coverings (and there's definitely a valid argument there).

However, right here in the good ol' progressive, civilized, first world US of A, land of the free, we forced a brain dead woman to incubate a likely disabled fetus long enough for her body to literally start rotting then stuck her family with the entire bill. We force children to carry the babies of their rapists. Women are forced to ask their husband's permission before making their own healthcare choices.

Muslims ain't the problem when misogyny of that level exists in every culture and nation. People here are just way too quick to point at Muslims and "other" them when they're actually the victims of oppression in this case.

Evil is all around us.

Exactly. People can claim it's about women's liberation all they want when in reality it's that they're Islamaphobes who welcome any and all attack on Islam whether it's effecting people who do wrong or not.

Religion is the cancer of this world, all of them. Disgusting. No point of sugar coating things.

It’s always woman that is the point of discussion and it’s always the men who’s discussing it. Disgusting!!!

I feel that’s it’s mostly the Abrahamic religions that are causing problems for people.

I kinda like Buddhism (the original one, not the new branches that are now filled with magic). It was more like a philosophy for making peace with life and death.

Honestly, every major religion has been used within its region to support state violence and oppression.
What you see of it, will just depend on where in the world you are from.

Myanmar, for instance, under the military dictatorship when it was Burma often relied on a Buddhist nationalism to legitimise it's leadership. This included forced conversions. And there are a number of militant groups in the region like DKBA or the 969 movement.
And in Sri Lanka, Buddhism is tied to the national identity and involved in a lot of sectarian conflict with regional minorities.

Another example is how shintoism in Japan was used to help justify the Sino-Japanese conflict & WW2 involvement.

No religion long term historically rooted religion is free from a history tainted by bloodshed. Our perceptions of where it's prominent or which religions are worse for it are shaped by regional bias, time and to the size and scale of the religion itself. It's "mostly" the Abrahamic religions purely because the Abrahamic religions are so widely spread and are some of the largest denominations globally in the modern age.

But religious violence, religious tensions and sectarianism pre-date the abrahamic religions. Look at how many conflicts of Ancient Greece were carried out on the basis that "One of the gods said to do it because they had beef with another god".
The issue isn't religion itself, it's the fact that every state in history has used the majority belief system to create a state mythos to uphold its rule.

I'm in no way religious. Ati-religious, actually, since it does nothing but harm.

It won't surprise you to know that a full face covering is nothing to do with religion.

It also won't surprise you to know that covering your face is considered obscuring your identity, disguising, or hiding.

Is there a difference between a balaclava and a full face covering? Not in practice.
