This is what I found: Lady Gaga made me feel like this. I thought her music, her looks, her packaging, her ‘message’ was tired, contrived and fake. I felt unable to relate to it and even though I could see that on paper she ticked off all the pop star boxes, the whole thing seemed to lack genuine meaning and soul. The fact that the whole album was based around fame/ celebrity/ material goods/ modern society seemed hollow and boring. However.. I have absolutely changed my mind. I might even go far as saying that she is extremely intelligent and is the closest thing we have had to a conceptual pop artist since the days of Madonna. Why The Gaga Project works? She is the embodiment of our society’s obsessions/ desire for ‘celebrity’ culture and is the epitome of the word ‘empty’. Growing up in a world where the media chooses to document a star’s 5lb weight gain over a presidential election feels weird to many of us and she is the product of living in a world where money, glamour and status are favoured over everything else until life begins to lacks meaning. She feels like the poster child of ‘fake’ celebrity / ‘fake’ stardom and ‘fake’ glamour. Though she is a star. It is a contradiction within a contradiction and this is what makes her so good. She represents the hollow desire that I think a lot of young people have these days to Be somebody/ Be Famous/ Be rich/ Be beautiful/ Because being ‘you’ is not enough. So. I still dont ‘love’ her but I find her interesting, hardworking and talented. Even though her verses and choruses sometimes feel a little bit ‘cut and paste’ like she has just sat in a studio and been told to write a pop song, i don’t mind. Even if you stripped her of all her shingaling, she would be normal/almost unattractive. I kind of like that though. https://marinaandthediamonds.fandom.com/wiki/Blog/2009/Apr/13/3 Sounds like Marina was admitting to misunderstanding The Fame at first, and maybe a bit still. Her tone is a bit immature (so was she at the time), but she didn’t necessarily say anything too damning about Gaga either. The ending sounds like she respects Gaga Probably not totally unreasonable first reaction to Gaga in 2009 Edited Tuesday at 11:09 PM by PeachJug

I remember another interview where she said GaGa looked weird, but her music wasn't (she did not say that in a demeaning way, she complimented her as well, and said that she thought GaGa was a good person, etc). I do like Marina's music, she's probably the only pop star besides GaGa that I respect, but I do find this notion of hers to be curious. She seems quite convinced that GaGa's music was unremarkable, when this is what put her in the map: You would believe she was doing some experimental, alt rock music based on how she spoke about GaGa, but... . "Electra Heart" is also quite similar to "The Fame" in terms of themes, etc. I think she was insecure about GaGa TBH. They have many, many aspects in common, but GaGa just did it better. Still love Marina though, I don't think there's ill intent or malice behind her words, but I do think there's a bit of professional jealousy, even if not consciously so. I think she's just didn't understand what The fame/TFM was really about, so I'm not going to hold a 15+ year old statement against her. She obviously loves Gagita now, she’s praised her many times throughout the past few years, she even did a Bloody Mary TikTok when the song was blowing up a few years ago. Let’s cut her a huge chunk of slack lol Edited Wednesday at 05:17 AM by ALGAYDO
