Miley’s new album “lacks a smash single” and “has no plot”

My main and basically only issue with the album is that she messes and plays around with song structure too much, to a fault. 
 

Our brains are used to structure and repetition, recognizing patterns. When you break away from the verse - pre-chorus - chorus order, you gotta make sure the listener can handle it or quickly go back to something that feels natural. This isn’t the case with this album. Most songs have interesting structures, but wherever I feel like a certain section or lyrics should play, we get a different breakdown or switch, and my brain fails to understand the flow of the song. 
 

For instance, End of The World is a great song up until the bridge, which goes on for far too long to the point my mind is waiting for the chorus to come back, but by the time it does, it dragged on too long. The same thing happened with Walk of Fame. You expect a grand final chorus, and instead she takes you to a full 1-2 minute instrumental with a different vibe all together, so I’m left with a sort of sensory depravation. I think this is why the music has not been connecting with people. If you’re gonna experiment you can’t push it past a certain point where the brain cannot anticipate what’s next. Otherwise it will feel disjointed.

Too many times listening to this record I went “oh, not where I expected this to go to”.

I hear why it could be hard to digest for the average pop listener but it's still a pretty solid and fun record
