Oh my god, it's because the science behind biological sex is so complex and nuanced that it shouldn't be used as the legal basis for these laws. That's the point, the archaic definition of "sex" as described by law is outdated and flawed and therefore needs to be replaced with the more socially accepted idea of gender. They didn't want to do that because the threshold for gender amounts to "what I identify as." Except, actually, the UK had the GRC system in place so that those that transitioned could have legal documentation to prove they had fulfilled the governments requirements to identify as their transitioned gender. No small feat, mind you. And then this ruling comes in and says "actually, even if you get a GRC, you're still not the gender you say you are, because we're choosing to stick with the outdated legal terminology."

And before you try and defend the definition of biological sex as chromosomal sex, this is a flawed method. That isn't how society operates, much less law - we don't deny people access to women-only spaces based on a DNA kit. Almost no one knows what their actual chromosomes are. If we forced everyone to take the tests to find out their chromosomal sex and used it as the basis for laws like the Equality Act, countless cis women will be denied protection under the law and forced into dangerous situations through no fault of their own.

To make anyone feel better, there’s been a HUGE backlash against this in the UK from members of the general public to public figures and politicians. These TERFs are a vocal minority who may have won this battle but they’re never gonna win the war.

For example, in my city alone I’ve seen bars and spaces I genuinely never expected flying the trans flag or putting it up digitally or businesses locally even posting about it online. In the last 24 hours alone our local queer scene has banded together and we’re doing fundraisers for trans charities and making sure trans people are highly visible and we’re being vocal. We’re not gonna let them win.

Also media in the UK revealed that this was part of one of Trumps demands. He has demanded we remove all protective laws for all LGBTQ+ people (yes even the white gays RIP to them) else he won’t go ahead with a trade deal with the UK. Our Supreme Court made the decision even without the government’s involvement as well fyi.

They literally said after passing this bullsh*t law that “Labour has to respect the decision” whether they like it or not.

You’re right, we’re not going to let them win. Trans people will never be erased. 

I’m so moved by the support in the UK but if you are not sure how you can help: check in with trans friends and loved ones, listen to trans people’s experiences and feelings, donate to LGBTQ+ charities. 

We will look back at this ruling as a dark day for human rights. No one is winning from this.

last time i gave that terf my money was 2016, before all that stuff came out about her being garbage.  thank god she has not gotten a cent out of me since.
