WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Monday he wants to deport some violent criminals who are U.S. citizens to Salvadoran prisons, a move that experts said would violate U.S. law.

Trump's comments marked the clearest signal yet that the U.S. president is serious about deporting naturalized and U.S.-born citizens, a proposal that has alarmed civil rights advocates and is viewed by many legal scholars as unconstitutional.

Trump said he would only go through with the idea if his administration determined it was legal. It was not clear what level of due process an American would receive before being deported to a country Washington has previously accused of serious human rights abuses, including harsh and arbitrary detentions.

"We always have to obey the laws, but we also have homegrown criminals that push people into subways, that hit elderly ladies on the back of the head with a baseball bat when they're not looking, that are absolute monsters," Trump told reporters during Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele's visit to the White House.

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele told reporters during a meeting with President Donald Trump on Monday that he would not return a man the Justice Department said it had mistakenly deported to his country.

"How can I return him to the United States? Like if I smuggle him into the United States?" Bukele said, sitting beside Trump in the Oval Office, when asked if he’d return Kilmar Abrego Garcia. "Of course I'm not going to do it. The question is preposterous."

Asked if he’d be released in his own country, he said, “We’re not very fond of releasing terrorists.”

Trump then turned to Bukele and said of the assembled reporters: "They'd love to have a criminal released into our country. These are sick people."

Trump also said he wants Bukele to take in as many criminals "as possible."

Garcia has never been charged criminally in the U.S. or El Salvador, according to court filings.

Justice Department officials have acknowledged that Garcia should not have been sent to El Salvador because of an immigration judge's 2019 order barring him from being sent there, and the Supreme Court has called his removal illegal and directed the administration to "facilitate" his return while being respectful of the president's authority.

They’re planning on throwing innocent protesters of his regime into prison and then deporting them to El Salvador. He’s just testing the waters by doing it to “violent” criminals first

I feel like I'm going crazy watching this and it seems like nobody cares. We are QUICKLY descending into a full on dictatorship right in front of our eyes.

Not to mention them not bringing back this man is clearly defying the 9-0 SCOTUS ruling saying he needs to come back and shouldn't have been deported.

People are starting to care. Last weekend there were anti Trump protests in every single state, some protests had hundreds of thousands of people in the streets. Plus Trump’s approval rating has dipped even lower. It’s just that his online sycophants and bots on Twitter and other online spaces have taken up a lot of the air time

Call me an optimist or naïve but I'm not actually that worried.

His supreme court puppets are voting against him, there are rumblings of people in congress moving to limit his power, millions and millions of Americans protest across the country every day, and his white house continues to be chaotic and prone to absolutely idiotic mistakes and clumsy handling of even basic things.

Bro's too stupid to destroy America and the ice is too thin for him to walk on.

One man (the dude they sent to El Salvador) finds himself at the center of a national fire storm that's pitting the branches of the federal government against itself. Imagine the implosion if Trump even THOUGHT to displace a citizen because of something as stupid as "well they're violent".

I don't buy that he has the capabilities. It's good that there are people who are wary of it, it means we aren't unprepared, but yeah. "Worried" is not a word I'd use yet.

So far he's just been insider trading and being a d*ck to America's allies while blowing a bunch of hot air about sh*t like this.

We also didn’t think a 34x felon would be president and here we are. 

I think we should be past the “he can’t do that” phase and be actively saying “We need to stop him”

Very hard for me to just say “I’m not worried” when there is an innocent man and potentially more in an El Salvador prison cell and will probably die there because El Salvador’s fascist dictator can get away with killing them.

Virtually ignoring the 9-0 SCOTUS ruling means they're getting cocky, which is a bad move on their part...it shows their hand too early. It's especially going to piss off Roberts and Coney-Barrett, and maybe even some of the more hack conservative justices.
