I hated Butterfly and found Cupid's Girl just okay but Cuntissimo is probably the best Marina in 10 years. Her lyrics are still abysmal but I'll take this over her psych 101 college course poetry.

Meh, I think it's totally lame when female popstars just steal some gay slang and co-opt that for their own brand for an album cycle. Like this is identical to what Kesha is going for this album cycle. Obviously just trend-chasing, and a good example of appropriation

so u can say a pop star is serving **** but she cant say it about herself? she got the **** hoe not u at the end of the day

It’s so much fun ! I definitely needed some fun from her after being focused on deep sociological issues since 2012 :laughga:

Super excited for a new era teehee

it’s a bop! so confused by the ridiculous number of f*gs critiquing her lyrics…. hasn’t she said this is a character-led album like Electra Heart??

she can write deep, meaningful things if she wants but this album seems like she’s exploring a vapid star character and it’s just meant to be silly / fun

show me to me please

I’ve actually never listened to her before but these last three songs got me hooked, really like how theatrical her way of singing is :music:

Yeah, kind of shocking. Gaga's writing been way worse sometimes than any of this, but well. To each their own.

I don't feel like I can articulate this well but let me be galaxy brained for a sec :abra: Neither of this is directly aimed at you guys, I'm just pontificating :bradley:

Spoiler

I think it's really interesting that we've moved from boss bitch female empowerment music to slay work diva music, but the shift relies on whether or not the artist has a big enough gay audience to make it feel authentic and not like a trend chasing pivot. Marina made music for girls and not The Girls in my estimation, and as a girl I liked that she was on the nose with her lyrics sometimes bc I identified with her lyrics and her frustrations.

But, we've also had a shift away from outright feminist messaging to a more open "girls and the gays", where it's co-opting gay slang about women but then redirecting it to and by (oftentimes) straight women - but it's also kind of a reclamation of power? (she got the c*nt hoe not you :icant:) but also kind of degrading to the lgbt community, bc it's straight women putting on the costume of queerness to be ~fierce~ in the same way white women listen to music by black women to "put on" being sexual, and white gay men "put on" the culture of black women/transwomen

It's like a Russian nesting doll of cultural appropriation, and I think it also reflects how we still think of women as being killjoy regardless of what lane they pick
