I'm not American and the references didn't mean anything to me, so I went to google. The full medley was a few lines from God Bless America, followed by a few lines from This Land Is Your Land, followed by those spoken words. God Bless America was written by Irving Berlin during World War 1 and revised by him in the run-up to World War 2. This Land Is Your Land was written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 as a critical response to God Bless America which he was sick of hearing on the radio. The idea of This Land Is Your Land is to bring in everybody, including the forgotten poor. Gaga's idea presumably is to try to bring everybody together, and the way she speaks the closing words, her emphasis on 'for all', is meant to draw attention to the fact that it's a simple idea, it doesn't discriminate, and it's nothing to be afraid of. There is a scene in Five Foot Two where she's getting her make-up done before the performance, and she talks about the country being 'so in peril right now, and in stress, and I think this is when it's most important to be an artist, and shine. Government doesn't have the power to change anything in music or in art'. That was 5 Feb 2017, two weeks after Trump's first inauguration. I see also that This Land Is Your Land was being used as a protest song on women's marches demonstrating against Trump. Honestly, thanks for posting this song by Bowie, he was incredibly aware and saw the writing on the wall in so many ways, his interview about how scary and impactful on society the internet would be and Paxman who was interviewing thought he was delusional. Sorry for the rant Yeah there's actually a lot of rumors from independent media that a travel ban draft is currently circulating. Some are saying European countries are on the "yellow list", which is basically a probation list. I'm hoping that if this is real and America gets much much worse that it be soon while I'm on a trip to Europe to see family. It'll be much easier. Greatly missed! I'm a big bowie fan and that is quite factual, along with Madonna and some other artists, they were very in tune with things happening.
