I know what it is but like, are there "consequences" to a bad score or "benefits" to a good one other than bragging rights for stans?

So long as she is 80+, she is fair game for AOTY so long as she continues the momentum come voting time. Think of Beyonce teasing/hyping her football performance for Cowboy Carter during the Grammy voting period.

Past winners have had scores below 80 (Taylor Swift, Adele, Bruno Mars). Harry Styles had an 83. Note that all artists had major hits from their records.

Jon Baptiste won because every other record was unserious (Evermore, Happier Than Ever - previous winners, Kanye West - cancelled, Justin Bieber & Love for Sale - unserious, Lil Nas & Doja Cat - unserious, Kendrick - they don't like rap). Same reason for Harry Styles winning, though they finally got Beyonce enough votes after adding significantly more POC to the voting body (which may fare well for Kendrick's GNX this year, but also for Gaga as she couldn't win any General category with the old voting body).

Right now it's looking like Gaga vs. Kendrick with the latter unfortunately having an advantage. Nice reviews, #1s, more hip-hop members in the voting body etc. We must defeat him & his overrated ass.

I feel Love For Sale should have won AOTY that year. It was well reviewed, and it was Tony Bennett’s final album. I don’t think that Jon Batiste album was well known then and it certainly hasn’t had any longevity or lasting legacy. But L4S will always be Tony’s last album and it’s too bad they didn’t honor it.

unrelated, I was looking at how Chappell and Sabrina already both have “universal acclaim” albums. I love Chappells album, and it has an 85, so higher than any Gaga album, but that’s from only 7 reviews. Gaga also had 85 after 7 reviews. It’s much harder to maintain with a much larger sample size of opinions.  But people will be able to say Chappell already has outscored any Gaga album because of that.

That's a fair score. While obviously I want the best for Gaga, I think anything higher would be exaggerated and I'm honest with my opinion that album loses its momentum in the second half and doesn't have that much of a cohesive concept. It's a solid album but it's by no means a 10/10.

And Bruno Mars has an AOTY win with an album scored at 70. Adele's highest score was 76. As is with the Oscars, industry > critics. Not saying this to be rude to Chappell, but she would be extremely lucky to achieve 14 Grammy wins in her career. Gaga is #7 for most wins by a female artist in Grammy history. She will easily rise to #3 as she is not far away (4 more awards).

That’s interesting about Bruno and Adele. TBH I never cared about metacritic scores until I started reading about them on here and atrl years ago and I became invested in wanting to see Gaga get a better score but it’s true that it doesn’t really mean anything. It’s just another marker and one that most people probably don’t even know about.

It kinda does a bit, most AOTY noms are for universally-acclaimed albums. So it definitely helps her chances at getting a big nom come Grammys times

Of course it would've been awesome for her to win but I would've found it very bittersweet if she won for a covers album, honestly. It would forever feel that it wasn't truly "her" win as she didn't create it, shared the credit and so many people would say she only won it because it was announced to be Tony's final album, he was ill and was most likely not to going to live much longer, so it would be seen as the sympathy vote.

I didn't know Chappell's score was only based on 7 reviews as there's 9 on the Wikipedia page but I guess not all of them counted towards MC. I always thought you needed at least 10 reviews to be considered for MC scoring. It is a bit wild that albums with 7 reviews are counted because then their ratio isn't fair compared to those who got their score based on 20+ critics. I definitely think it's crazy that Sabrina Carpenter has an album scored in the 80's when that album was just cute pop songs, average at best. I sometimes think critics forget how good music can sound so they end up giving outrageous scores like this, they rate albums like it's the first time they've ever heard music. The vast amount of artists getting high scores these days is such a contrast to the old days when critics were so much harsher. I don't know where the turn-around came from and I also don't know if it's good or bad.

The Observer gave it an 80 yesterday which is what set it back up another point! The Evening Standard also gave it a perfect 5-star review, though that doesn't count towards scores, unfortunately, don't know why MC won't accept certain publications because a lot of them are perfectly respectable. After 8 days, the reviews must be all in by now, so we can definitely rest easy. I'm glad it only dropped one point at the end of the day after its initial debut of 85. Considering The Tortured Poets Department debuted in the 80's and than gradually fell as the week progressed ending with a 76 (3 points lower than Chromatica and Taylor's first album in years to have a score lower than the 80's), I feared critics might think that initial score was overrated and start giving it the same treatment but she held on. The album is THAT GOOD. :firega:

I can't believe Variety gave it an 80, but gave Chromatica close to a perfect score. Few other publications right-sized their scores compared to Chromatica and middled out at an 80. I hope a few more 90s pull through for her to rebound to 85. Definitely deserves between 85-90.
