They were defined as creature of "divine madness", they cause chaos, mayhem in the name of Dionysus. Who is the lady in red in Abra? Red the color of wine and death, could connect to these women but also might be connected to Pentheus, from Euripides' The Bacchae, in the story Dionysus chose Pentheus' disguise to be women clothes, mostly it's interpreted in the color red, to represent the wine of Dionysus or death. In the story, he spied on the maenads rituals, but when they discovered him they tore him apart and killed him. And how the spell abracadabra matches this? Dionysus influence on these women and people in general was "spellbinding" / "divine enchantment", he made people lose control over themselves and be devoted to him through sex, madness and death.
