The witch in the original film adaptation guaranteed nightmares into adulthood for generations of young innocents. Wicked is a revisionist text, recasting evil as persecuted otherness. And that’s how an all-singing, all-dancing Hollywood musical becomes an unexpectedly subversive commentary on a world where the swelling tide of authoritarianism is chillingly reflective of the moment in history when The Wizard of Oz first appeared on movie screens, in 1939.
