Future Lovers 7,616
GENERAL NOTE: I know there has been a lot of talk in the last 2-3 years about the safety of airplanes in the wake of the Boeing controversies. Please avoid digging into sensationalism with this. Not only have a lot of the stories about a safety problem with airplanes been unfounded, untrue, or highly blown out of proportion, but this event is not likely to come as a result of a failure of the plane. Mid-air collisions, as this is reported to be, are almost always a result of human error. This has been declared a mass casualty event. Both aircraft landed in the Potomac River and there is a massive search and rescue operation underway. The plane involved is an American Eagle bombadier jet, a relatively short range, domestic carrier jet. There were reportedly 60 passengers on board. It is unknown how many have survived. David Ward 9,613
WASHINGTON -- A plane crashed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia on Wednesday evening after a midair collision, the Federal Aviation Administration said. "All takeoffs and landings have been halted at DCA. Emergency personnel are responding to an aircraft incident on the airfield. The terminal remains open. Will update," the airport wrote on X. https://x.com/MOHAMMAD_AARSH/status/1884798119306539233 https://abc7.com/post/dc-plane-crash-reagan-national-airport-closed-due-aircraft-emergency-small-goes-down/15847811/

Concertaholic 6,581
This is so tragic! Praying for survivors. A US airliner hasn’t experienced a plane crash since 2001…
weed 78,959
Innocent companies don't have whistleblowers let alone murder them and frame it as suicide. Very sad incident here, RIP to everyone involved. Very tragic

I simply think that it helps absolutely nobody to start injecting sensationalist clickbait into a tragedy. It's in bad taste, it injects a lot of disinformation into a world already filled with it, and it inspires fear in people when there is no need. This is a serious tragedy and the last thing it needs is conspiracy theory bullshit attached to it. Yes, Boeing does shady stuff and they deserve criticism. That does not change the fact that the stories about massive safety issues with airplanes are simply not true. It also is going to be completely irrelevant to this case s the plane in question was not manufactured by Boeing. It was manufactured by Bombardier Engineering, a company with an excellent safety record.

StarstruckIllusion 53,565
Absolutely heartbreaking and terrifying. I hold the military accountable because how do fly so carelessly around an airport as a military pilot? I hope there’s survivors - the way it fell seems like there might be a possibility of survival apparently

I hold the military accountable because how do fly so carelessly around an airport as a military pilot? I hope there’s survivors - the way it fell seems like there might be a possibility of survival apparently We now have ATC recordings that seems to suggest no one was behaving irresponsibly per say, but rather something happened that caused confusion. ATC contacted the helicopter and asked them if they had visual contact with the CRJ and they said yes, they would maintain visual separation. The collision happened 15 seconds later. Now, an investigation can reveal a lot more, but this seems to suggest that the pilots saw a plane, but not the plane. The runway the CRJ was approaching is apparently not commonly used for inbound commercial traffic, and these pilots in the helicopter would know that, so it's very possible they were looking toward the runway that the CRJ would typically be landing at rather than where it actually was and they never actually saw the CRJ to start with. This also happened at extremely low altitude The TCAS system that planes have that warns them if they are close to an object or another flight does not function below a certain altitude because all runway approaches are to be done visually under visual flight rules, so it's very possible the CRJ never was aware the helicopter was there either. ATC knew both aircraft were in the area, but it's looking very possible that neither aircraft actually knew where the other one was, or in one's case, never knew it was there at all. As I said, investigation can change things but this actually looks like it may be on ATC's shoulders.

southpaw773 4,366
Loss for words for the souls. There hasn’t been a US crash like this in a while, like 2009 for a regional, 2001 larger jet. Going to maybe be either pilot error or ATC but I thought there would be radar and safety alert systems in both aircraft. Black boxes hopefully will tell but this should not ever have happened. I might need a hero to save me from breaking
