CDC ordered to stop working with WHO

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. public health officials have been told to stop working with the World Health Organization, effective immediately.

A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official, John Nkengasong, sent a memo to senior leaders at the agency on Sunday night telling them that all staff who work with the WHO must immediately stop their collaborations and “await further guidance.” 

Experts said the sudden stoppage was a surprise and would set back work on investigating and trying to stop outbreaks of Marburg virus and mpox in Africa, as well as brewing global threats. It also comes as health authorities around the world are monitoring bird flu outbreaks among U.S. livestock.

The Associated Press viewed a copy of Nkengasong’s memo, which said the stop-work policy applied to “all CDC staff engaging with WHO through technical working groups, coordinating centers, advisory boards, cooperative agreements or other means — in person or virtual.” It also says CDC staff are not allowed to visit WHO offices.

I truly don't understand what the point of things like this are, just from a logistics perspective.

The only motive for the Trump administration I can imagine is appealing to the MAGA conspiracy crowd and making it look like they're "doing something", but even then it just opens the floodgates for another COVID-like disaster for the country. It makes zero f*cking sense to cripple your country's defence against the spread of dangerous viruses and diseases.

Unless it’s just another move since they know very well that on these occasions the minorities usually get more affected so it’s just make it easier for them to get rid of things and people they don’t wanna deal or be responsible for

The point of doing something like this serves a couple different purposes, but the big ones at play come from the fact that they want to make life miserable for skilled workers in the federal workforce.

Another priority, according to Vought, was to “defund” certain independent federal agencies and demonize career civil servants, which include scientists and subject matter experts. Project 2025’s plan to revive Schedule F, an attempt to make it easier to fire a large swath of government workers who currently have civil service protections, aligns with Vought’s vision.

“We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected,” he said. “When they wake up in the morning, we want them to not want to go to work because they are increasingly viewed as the villains. We want their funding to be shut down so that the EPA can't do all of the rules against our energy industry because they have no bandwidth financially to do so. The fact that the people in the CDC are contributing to our, y'know, continued survival is a footnote to the Trump administration. At worst they represent wasteful spending. At best: some time of existential threat to a Conservative rule of law because collective action is bad... or something.

Another 'purpose' that this serves is that Trump, a meglomaniac, is running a heavily nationalist policy, so if he or someone around him feels like the WHO is one-upping America or, again... something, then this destabilization to the public health infrastructure is a bargaining chip. The current admin sees organizations like the WHO as ninny, pencil pushing do-gooders that waste too much American money (or something). So the fact that we could all be dead in a year from bird blu ebola SARS chickpox is again, a footnote in their large ideological agenda.

They are doing this to artificially lower the cost of basic foods. 
Because without the WHO obligations, they'll cut the testing & health standards for farming. 

No more preventative culls of livestock in infection areas. No more precautionary tests & paperwork. 

Bio-disaster waiting to happen given the current Bird Flu variants.
