In the relentless search to know how the ancestors of humans spread across the world, the latest evidence has revealed that hominins were in Europe at least 1.95 million years ago.

Clues on their presence were recently found by researchers at an archaeological site in Romania that could now help explain hominins’ early dispersal out of Africa.

A study published in Nature Communications details the prominent find, which predates evidence of hominins previously found at other sites across Europe.

Researchers involved with the study uncovered new answers at Grăunceanu, a site that lies south of the Carpathian Mountains in a river valley that is rich in fossils.

The bone surface modifications show that hominins had likely come to Grăunceanu around 2 million years ago, making it the earliest European hominin site known so far. The researchers, however, cannot say for sure what species the hominins were.

Environmental reconstructions based on isotopic analyzes of horse dentition suggest Grăunceanu would have been relatively temperate and seasonal, demonstrating a wide habitat tolerance in even the earliest hominins in Eurasia.

Why do they always make prehistoric humans so fit in depictions, like... look at the back on the closest one :fatcat:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

Because they spent their whole day running, climbing, swimming, lifting and throwing things, etc. unlike modern humans who spend 90% of the day sitting down. :bear:

*Also, they had no processed foods, no sugar or trans fats, etc.

Both reasons are valid! In fact agriculture which is a relatively recent thing that fundamentally altered our diet. Prehistoric humans not only they were jacked, but cavities-free, for the most part, because they ate lots of meat and protein and less carbohydrates. :traumatica:

Also not you calling me out my hunched back posture rn.

It's giving the user thristing over Saber Tooth Cat, but you have the right intuition. :enigma:

Prehistoric humans were more masculine because over the generations men were selected for feminine characteristics, which in turn made male and female physiognomy less distinctively male and more effeminate. You would have had a blast meeting men from Paleolithic.

The idea is true after all, it's just that the timescale is wrong. :ororomunroe:

Also men became less masculine-looking not only bc men with more feminine traits had more se*, but also bc feminine-looking females had more children, which in turn made them less masculine no matter their gender, so I was partly wrong.

Well, clearly my mom didn't get the memo :cyanlights:
I mean I'm not the most masculine-looking guy, but I could use a bit more femming upping tbh :crossed:

I didn't realize that people who are more femme are seemingly more... fruitful overall when it comes to reproduction, that's interesting, and a fun fact to throw at ultraconservative men I'm sure :vegas:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
