Well, it’s a bit more complicated and nuanced than that.. he‘s the only member with a writing credit, he’s the one who wrote it. And while he says he‘s fine with it being an anthem for the gay community, it‘s not what he wrote it about, and „coming January 2025“ he will have his wife go against every news publication claiming it was purposefully written about it.

The history of the Village People and Y.M.C.A. is actually quite interesting and twisted. The whole gimmick of the band was to capitalize and exploit a potential gay fan base while never explicitly aligning with said community when presenting themselves with and especially after reaching mainstream success, because… well, homophobia. And as I said, YMCA was written by one of the straight members, who always said he never wrote it from a queer perspective but rather from the perspective of a working man of color. And he was on a mission to make that clear even in the seventies.
