Anita Bryant was a public figure during the civil right movement. She was a pageant queen, a singer, and she represented the Florida Citrus Commission. Most notably, however, she was an anti-gay public figure. She regularly stated harmful things about gay people, and she is likely one of the first bigoted public figures to claim that being gay in public places harms children; she founded an organization titled "Save The Children". Her statements derailed her career, and received backlash in the form of being pied. Years later in 2021, her granddaughter Sarah Green married a woman. Anita Bryant died of cancer back in December.
