These nonsensical statements are all to deflect all the real serious bullsh it his team will do. It keeps his poorly educated supporters riled up  and they’ll be saying “Ummerrrca number one!!” or that rename this is “patriotic.”

I'm Australian and I've never understood this criticism. In English the continent is "North America" not "America". A continent called "America" does not exist. 

If I say I'm "going to America" people are gonna be confused when I go to Canada.

And I don't wanna speak for Canadians, but in my experience they don't react too fondly to being called "American"

It's a strong sentiment for many South Americans I think, when I lived in Chile my boyfriend said I was Statesian lmao and me and him as well as all Chileans should be considered Americans.

America = USA is an English-centric and European view. That’s where the confusion is. 

In Latin American countries, in which where Spanish is mostly spoken they refer to people from the US as “Estadunidense” which translates to “United Statian” It sounds stupid in English. 

As far as I’m concerned, since the US is an English-centric country, there’s no issue with me calling myself American. 

And quite frankly, someone from another country doesn’t get to decide how I call myself.

Besides the stupidity, linguistics is always an interesting topic 

why the US, and all it’s allies established there are two continents North and South America but in Latin American countries it’s established there is one just America, that’s when you realize geography is very political and every country even uses its own geographical terms to express a political view 

Besides that either progressive or conservative USA people get so influenced by its country’s politics that they don’t bother to retain geography and think their country is the center of the world and despise/treat with inferiority other countries and peoples concepts just by example the comment above, and people don’t realize those ideas are in their mind they just replicate them

I don't think european people, specially those from the regions who ACTUALLY NAMED THE CONTINENT, and used the word to describe south american territory, really think "America = US". Mainly because they probably learn about it in like, 3rd grade, lol.

When someone from the UK says “I’m going to America” they mean they are going to the USA, not Bolivia. 

This is common knowledge in the English speaking world.

The UK is not really the demographic that discovered, or named, the continent. You said "european view", and The United Kingdom is just a tiny country, of many, in Europe. I'm sure most countries in Europe know their own history, specially Spain, lol.

Well, that wikipedia article was not written 500 years ago, was it? . Human history doesn't change based on language, or personal preference based on ignorance. 

America is a continent, and the word doesn't even originally refer to the area the US is located in, lol. If you can be familiar with the concept of "East Asia", it shouldn't be that hard to get around "South America/North America", it's the same thing, lol.

The history of the word is irrelevant to what it's called today. My country was originally called "New Holland" but like hell anyone is gonna call it that now. 

America is a continent IF YOU'RE SPEAKING SPANISH. America is not a continent in the English language, nor were English speakers taught that it's a single continent. Idk why this is such a hard concept to grasp. It's like fighting English speakers for calling Germany "Germany" instead of "Deutschland".

People call countries/regions/continents different things in different languages and that's okay. 

Also I'm not sure why Americans aren't allowed to decide what to call themselves. It's their country.
