The Joanne era was really perfect. Great management, lots of appearances, it's the last time I got the sense that she was passionate about her music.

Did you watch her recent interview with Rolling Stone? She takes you along the process of creating Disease and talks about it and LG7. She seems very passionate and excited about the music she’s creating, and I’m not the only one that thought so judging by the comments.

People know that they can expect a good show from Gaga. No matter what song she does. I remember Hold My Hand and Happy Mistake had small boosts after their live performances.

As for LG7, Disease and the MV was a gift for the fans. It’s very obvious not GP friendly at all.

Even Gaga herself said that she wanted to make something “that sounded different” and they went with “wrong choices.” So instead of something mainstream it’s something left field.

Also Cirkut said his mom was “shocked” at the song and video. This one is not for the GP and soccer moms.

I don’t see Disease getting any major performances until Coachella and Copacabana.

I’m sure they’re planning the 2nd single rollout rn - and it’s a more GP friendly single with more performances. I think Gaga does want to perform but she’s being strategic about her appearances - especially after the JFAD bomb.

I mean let’s look at Katy: sooooo many huge performance slots (VMAs, Australia, Rock in Rio, Jingle Ball, Mexican talk shows) and it didn’t move the needle on her sales and streams.

Th opposite for Chappell. Her late night performance and other appearances boosted her streams and sales.

It also depends on how the GP feels about you rn.

Ya'll are still stuck in 2010 lol

Promo for an album cycle is a WASTE OF MONEY.

The real promo should focus on the tour.

Nobody ears money to feed their dogs from selling music unless they scam their fans.

If you’re talking about an unknown independent artist, yes, but Lady Gaga? She could pay all of our taxes with the money she makes only with music sales :deadbanana:

Though she’s a mainstream artist, she’s like a very specific subcategory of ‘fine art’ within that. She’s not generic enough, and because everything she does is so different, the gp are probably aware that she released, but because it doesn’t look the way her ‘big’ things have recently, they probably don’t think it’s a main project or smth worth paying attention to. It happens with me and other artists I like, so I kind of know exactly why it happens. Plus, the gp nowadays expect a certain sound from her - the overall positive reaction to MR from them, and then the insane success of both Shallow and DWAS. I’ll talk to friends about her who never really got into her (we were too young to really experience her superstardom when she was younger, but everyone knows her songs), and play them some of her lesser known stuff or newer stuff, and they’re blown away. Happens every time. I think it’s not that stuff isn’t promo’d enough, but that her more ‘commercial’ success is SO vast, that people overlook her experimental artistry side, to the point that sometimes they don’t even know it exists.

a key memory is when shallow was at the peak of it’s success, and sooo many ‘popular’ kids I know were saying it’s their fav song. I wasn’t preppy enough to be in the ‘popular’ crowd even though most were my very good friends, but I also wasn’t ‘weird’ enough to be an outcast, so I was like ideal middle ground to both sides. I think I just came across as a slightly kooky, extroverted teenage girl who was really into music and fashion, so wasn’t weird enough to be bullied, but also not normal enough to be a true part of the ‘in crowd’. When I would go out with the ‘popular girls’, we’d talk about stuff they felt too weird to mention in front of the guys - things like their interest in Gaga outside of just ASIB, their sexualities, interests in fashion and makeup outside of what was deemed ‘normal and cool’ (this was the peak of designer sportswear etc as normal clothing lol). I played them some stuff from ARTPOP one time and they absolutely ate it up. But I think they felt it had to be kept a secret, they’d come alive talking about this stuff when it was just us girls, there was like an unsaid rule that we couldn’t speak about it when we were with the boys, so we just never did. One girl would flash me her phone screen whenever Venus came on when she was listening to music for YEARS lol.

I just think the gp wasn’t interested in music like that from BTW onwards, and it was still seen as ‘weird and embarrassing’ right up until I finished school in 2020, and because of that, the people that would be interested in it weren’t exposed to it. It seems to still be like that now, though it seems to be wearing off, thankfully (Charli, Chappell etc. appealing to the gp in such a successful way). I think it’s annoyingly more complicated than it seems. I think it’ll change back to being ‘in’ again though tbh, there seems to be a huge gay pop renaissance on the horizon

Because I personally feel that Gaga isn’t a mainstream artist and only was one for a bit because it was literally a one once in a lifetime thing. She’s an alternative artist through and through. She takes risk , she’s not afraid to fail. I’ve always placed Gaga with artist like Bjork, Marylin Manson types but even better. Mainstream artist are palpable to the masses , alternative artist are not.

Placing Gaga with Bjork is a stretch. Gaga is a mainstream pop star. She dabbles here in there but she isn’t an alternative act just because her numbers aren’t what they used to be

Some of y'all in this thread acting as if Gaga is an underground artist. Every artist has flop eras and successful eras.

Every household name goes through this. Every one. Beyonce has had flop singles. Taylor Swift has had flop singles. Ariana Grande has had flop singles.

Every Gaga album debuts with hundreds of thousands of sales. I think we notice Gaga's flops more than we notice other artists' flops.

Honestly this nails it imo.

The schedule already looks like she was very clearly expecting better from JFAD and that Disease was a deliberate choice as an "out there" first single to potentially capitalise on JFAD.

Then ride out JFAD into 2025 when she drops a 2nd single and the album at the very start during awards season.

Then move straight into Coachelle & Copacabana.

I think they've been sensible by not filling the slot they left for JFAD because it let JFAD's hate train die due to a lack of fuel without Gaga getting pulled under it.

I believe it’s because she was literally everywhere for the first 5 years of her career and then now she (much like Beyoncé) knows how to keep out of the spotlight and everyone wonders what she’s been upto. So they then pay attention when she finally reappears.

That and the fact her music isn’t promoted anymore by the label in the way it used to because she’s older and not “down with the kids” so to speak. So people sometimes don’t know she has new music out until it’s promoted properly.

I think you’re pretty right, Disease also feels very much like a fan favourite album song finally released it’s almost comparatively the same as say Government Hooker vibes wise.

I remember back in the day when she would struggle to get songs she and the fans loved released and had to fight for them (ala Alejandro) look how badly she wanted Sß and HML as singles. This sort of feels like them saying “okay she’s a legacy act now she can do what she wants” and bc DWAS was smashing and still is they were like “yeah sure release that metal song in a pop songs body you love”

I watched that Rolling Stone interview. I think she's all in on music still. Bear in mind she's not acting in a movie every day. Someone says to her 'sign up for JFAD and we'll pay you 12m', so she thinks about it for a minute or two and then she says 'ok'. Then shooting takes a couple of months and promo takes another couple of months. But music ? I think that's every day, I don't mean doing music promo, I mean creating. That's what she loves doing. And commercially ? It's mainly about the tours I think. Filling stadiums now, megabucks. There'll be a tour for this album. She'll live in the gym for a while beforehand, she'll do a wedding to get her eye in and earn some spare cash for sundries, and she'll kill it.

The answers and OP’s question really don't have anything to do with her being “promo sensitive”.

Being promo sensitive means being able to boost sales and popularity through performances compared to other artists. Gaga is able to do that because whether people are fans of her or not, when they watch her perform, they are reminded why she is such a big deal, and they look into her music again. She has perfect stage presence, an amazing voice and the best theatrics, and people like that. Other artists these days do not have that, and when they perform, it doesn’t translate to much.

The general understanding of this question on here seems to be a frustration and complaining as to why she’s not a universally liked mainstream artist. She actually is, and has currently maybe has the biggest hit of the year, it just seems like her fans like complaining about her and comparing her to her 2009 era.

Well, all the artists you mentioned promote their asses off. Kendrick started that massive beef with Drake, Taylor masterfully uses the media to promote her relationship, and Beyonce makes sure her image is everywhere (Mufasa premiere, Super Bowl commercials, etc).
