The book does specify in this case and when you have such a vivid mental image of a character it's hard to see them in someone who looks completely different. Snape is described as "pallid" and having "sallow skin," meaning very white/pale so as to look like he's sick which contributes to why he was outcast, with long oily straight black hair. Does this fit the man in the OP? You can't expect people not to react negatively to that. Fair enough. Its been a long time since i read the books, so i might have getting the discussion get to me preemptively. I still believe at some points judgement wasn't necessarily rooted in faithfulness to the source material, but to one specific interpretation that we all grew custom to. But you are right in what you said
Phaye Monster 8,695
“I’m okay with diversity except when I’m not (which is anytime a reboot is more diverse than the original)” - a repetitive story from GGD your love for a character does not prevent them from ever seeing change. There is nothing wrong with this change. This is a positive change that allows a new, black actor to play an iconic role with a unique character that hopefully helps cement more talent in the industry. It doesn’t mean that they’re getting rid of Alan Rickman’s portrayal. That will still exist too. “but in the books he was described as pale!!!” Well the original movies also cut out plenty from the books and changed several other aspects about the characters but I never see anyone complain about that! Either way we won’t be watching bc f*** JK and her anti-trans agenda. I just feel a need to point out the hypocrisy and prejudice of some of you on GGD bc you’re really starting to sound like the “I’m not homophobic just don’t shove it down my throat, keep it away from kids” etc people I'm an ARTPOP bitch, baby 4 1
Charmz 4,041
He’s too young for the role? Idk I’ll wait and see I guess Always & Forever, 🧚🏻♂️🦉CHARMZ🦉🧚🏻♂️

Idk I’ll wait and see I guess To that point, I think Rickman was too old. Someone did the math somewhere already, saying he was as old as Lily, and she was 20 when they had Harry, meaning Snape was 31 when POTTER entered the school
Super 929
I hate when shows ruin a established book based character just for the sake of "diversity". Diversity seems more appropiate than finding the right person for the part. Like. its based on having to be a minority just for the sake of it instead of being faithful to the story, its characters and the idea– I'm sick of it. It's performance. And yes, it will not be well received - but people will forget about it in a week because they fear being called racist or whatever. Does this fit the man in the OP? You can't expect people not to react negatively to that. Black people can have sallow and pallid skin. When someone has too little hemoglobin or oxygen in their body, their skin can appear pale. In people with darker skin tones, this can make their skin look ashy, white, or gray, especially in the conjunctiva and oral mucosa. Signs of sallow skin include skin that appears paler, yellower, or browner than normal, or skin that is dull, uneven, rough, flaky, or patchy. So sallow & pallid is not equal white. The books never explicitly state Snape's race.
JazzGa 14,563
When I first read Harry Potter as a little kid (specifically, when my mom read it to me ) for some reason I always pictured Snape as a 70s black man wearing a funky suit with a big 'fro, kind of Bootsy Collins style (not that I knew who that was when I was 5). I have no idea why I pictured Black Funky Snape, but I did, and apparently I was onto something. Feeling very validated right now lol. My old cat is a tough man, but i cant deny the way he bites my hand and he stabs me, he grabs me by my heart <3

Reginald 13,839
I have to laugh at the fact that having an inclusive cast will piss off the same people who idolize JKR for being transphobic Also, this show has now been delayed until 2027. Something is telling me it will be scrapped™ altogether.
