Page Six: Lady Gaga Almost Starred As Elphaba For Wicked Movie

The cast of the “Wicked” movie almost looked a lot different, with Stephen Daldry as director and Lady Gaga and Shawn Mendes in lead roles. 

The English director and producer of “The Crown” had Gaga in mind to play the character of Elphaba according to sources familiar with the project. 

We hear he and the “Bad Romance” singer even met a few times to flesh out the character.

“They had meetings, the two of them, about the character and who she would be. [Gaga] was essentially cast in his version, and then it fell through,” the source said.

I'm sure Gaga could've killed the role but Cynthia is just too perfect in every way. She was born to play Elphaba.

She was my dream casting before Ms. Cynthia was announced! Luckily Cynthia was one of 3 people I was gonna accept in the role lol 

Maybe with a little prayer and manifesting we can get a Hollywood Bowl concert or a temporary guest stunt casting before the Wicked craze dies down. That'd be a killer way to start her Broadway journey

I think she just couldn't commit for 2 parts movie, Ari's career is kinda on hold now.

I felt the same way with what you said at the top but Gaga will NEVER replace in a Broadway show, especially not Wicked. Her Elphaba ship has sailed, sadly.

You're probably right about Elphaba. I was thinking of a Little Shop/Chicago/Hadestown limited engagement stunt cast method to get her in there and I really could see a Hollywood Bowl thing being possible but I don't think bway Wicked even does temp roles anymore. I'll still pray for it though!
