I dont know, the fact that people can get arrested for saying a word is insane to me

Yeah with intent against someone that it is aimed at, the police aren't swarming around people saying words to themselves at home :triggered:

There has to be consequences, it's why racists keep it to themselves here for the most part. It's why racists feel emboldened in the US, there's no consequences clearly.

Perhaps I am just an absolutist when it comes to the issue of free speech but as a progressive, that sentiment is disturbingly authoritarian to me and could be applied in horrible ways to other groups of people if someone wanted to go after them. Racism is obviously terrible but arresting 10 clowns for waving a flag around is not true spirit of liberalism and it sets a very dangerous precedent that you can go after someone for saying something or thinking a certain way. These people are not engaging in violence and nobody ever said it was a crime to be racist in this country.

As Voltaire said "I do not agree with what you have to say. But i'll defend to the death your right to say it"

Do you not think that people should be banned from social media for using racist or homophobic insults then? Or they should be able to hurl abuse at people under the guise of "free speech". Is that not why X has become what it is? Surely some form of regulation to avoid harm is needed?

Well first of all, banning someone from social media is different than arresting them for flying a flag in the street. Secondly, I would need to see the nature of what they had posted in order for me to decide if it merited a ban

Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan

We must just be accustomed to our own cultures, I find it crazy someone can walk around with a nazi flag without getting in trouble :saladga:

I understand your point of the censorship going the other way, but that's something that that wouldn't happen in the UK because you wouldn't be able to have a government that would implement something like that due to our laws regarding who can be elected as an MP and run the country, another thing America struggles with. For example if an MP or member of government even made a problematic tweet they would need to resign. We will agree to disagree :huntyga:

Nobody should be arrested for racism aimed at someone if its just saying a word, unless you are harassing someone, then the punishment should be hate crime harassment?

What if the government decides saying Zionist is hate speech? now I cant criticize Zionists anymore! Twitch just banned the word Zionist so nobody can use it anymore.

See that's wild to me, so if someone is screaming the N word at someone on the train they shouldn't get in trouble? We will have to disagree I fear, at least I live somewhere where I know minorities are protected I guess.

If someone just says the N word towards someone in the train, I dont think the government should be able to do anything, unless its harassment or inciting violence.

Lets say me and my brother were having a heated debate, and because he got frustrated, his homophobia comes out and calls me the F word. Should I be able to put him in jail?

And so it begins. He's not even in office yet and it's already started. Things are gonna change so much in the next few years and a lot of innocent people are going to die, or otherwise have their lives ruined in other ways permanently. I HATE it here

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Did no one try to shout back or do something worse? People need to start pushing back.

They had guns :air: I don’t blame anyone for not engaging with them because who knows what they would do.

Hard disagree with this way of thinking. Hate groups cannot be tolerated.

You shouldn't jail someone for having an opinion but people walking around with swastika flags absolutely belong in prison. Or at least face down in the gutter after some righteous civilian knocks them tf out :icant:

"Make Nazis Scared Again", that's what I say :haroon: people like this used to get chased out of town by bikers and rednecks with shotguns. Bring those days back tbh.
