do we all need to hear this because DWAS is #2 or because Disease is at #27?

I get you're just joking, but the point of what she said in the OP's link goes perfectly with what Bobby said after the halftime show in 5'2.

Pop musicians are nothing without their art, and when they make compromises to climb the charts they lose control... and audiences end up being fed nothing but music approved by corporate heads in suits studying algorithms to try and break the code to what makes a hit single.

Bobby and the rest of the Haus celebrating Million Reasons charting post-super bowl was because Joanne was a passion project that Gaga wanted to produce regardless of what her label OR her "fans" were demanding from her. Despite the uphill battle and mixed reception at launch, Gaga's showmanship and sheer star power were yet again the cherry on top of the equation - proving no amount of strategy matters in the end as long as you can stand behind your work.

It's just taking the fun out of enjoying the music and talking about it. Liddos wanted darkGa knowing it probably wouldn't be GP-friendly. Liddos complained about the GP-friendly ballads.

Then she releases something not GP-friendly, most fans actually LIKE it when it comes out and agree the video slaps. Then it doesn't chart very high because it's not easy for the GP to digest and and there's no TikTok hype yet - and instead of just keeping enjoying and supporting the song - everyone turns on the song and feeds into an endless negativity loop.

Exactly! Gaga’s talked in the past about wanting to release songs as singles that the label disagreed with, like Aura and Scheiße for example. These are experimental songs that are some of my all time favorites, but they probably wouldn’t be GP friendly and therefor wouldn’t chart high. I’m so excited that this era we’re starting off with a wild, chaotic song that’s not necessarily GP friendly, like this is what we’ve been CRAVING for YEARS!! If it’s a hit, yay! If not, then hell yeah, we still have a new darkga banger to enjoy!!

All of this.

Along with all the people running with the "MUSIC NOT THE BLING" and "ART NOT CHARTS" jokes when you point this out, along with the tired accusations of fans weaponizing a wheel of excuses for her (I've got my eye on you atrl :triggered:) whenever she doesn't immediately hit #1.

Something changed with Twitter/X and now even we can't get them to embed properly. No idea why.

OT: I'm so glad I have never cared about charts :icant:

Yeah, a lot of the liddos on here (and elsewhere) just wanna relive the glory days of her being daring while simultaneously topping the charts and will never be happy if it’s one or the other. Kinda pathetic tbh

Okay, but we all know "Disease" is not a "pure" art move. It's a calculated decision based on the TikTok success of "Bloody Mary" and "Judas."

So acting like we're influencing a pure artist's work is sort of disingenuous.

Gags could go rogue and not chase pop success. But that's not what I've seen with Chromatica and LG7. I'm seeing someone trying to make pop music that hits with young people to stay relevant.

If anything, Harlequin is the rogue anti-commerce record. And I love it.

LG7 is a bid for renewed relevance and chart success.

Also, remember when she said that selling fragrances was crushing her soul and then she spent the last five years shilling Sephora makeup?

Idk if you remember this, but the album she’s promoting in this clip is called ARTPOP (I think you might’ve heard of it) and the whole thesis (as has been the broader musical thesis of Gaga’s career) is synthesizing her creative drive and desire to create subversive art and to ultimately channel it into something commercial, so it’s a little disingenuous to insinuate that she’s not aware of what medium she’s working in when she makes comments about creative freedom. We’re not talking about Björk here, we’re talking about Lady Gaga lmao

Gaga’s never (ever ever ever) struck me as an artist who’s going out of her way to make art solely for the sake of relevance and commercial success. If anything is influenced by Bloody Mary’s resurgence it’s that maybe it’s made Gaga herself feel nostalgic for a style of music that she hasn’t made in a long time. But this song also isn’t Bloody Mary 2.0, it’s Disease, its own entity that’s stemmed from her own passions and artistic goals
