“We’re not going back.” Forget TFM and BTW.

Take this song for what it is. It is Gaga actually branching into grunge and metal. Journalists describing it as a “return to form” and reminiscent of her earlier work did a disservice to us all, including Gaga. This is not TFM or BTW. That was over a decade ago, so let’s move on.

When I forget this is a song by Gaga every preconception melts away and I actually very much dig it. It is a torturous thing to be trapped in the past, and Gaga herself has been dropping hints she has moved on and we should also.

My first instinct with this song was "if this was by another artist..." and I think that is VERY much the point. If this were by some new artist, I'm going to call her Stefani Polanksi, we'd have no expectations of it, the rollout, anything. This is a moment that Gaga is wiping the slate clean. She already told us that CBT/Harlequin was a goodbye to the Gaga of before and she was about to step into a new chapter. So we are starting at zero. Remember that. Starting at zero. Ground zero: like the setting of a zombie apocalypse? A disease that has wiped out everything that came before? You picking up what Gaga's putting down? :max:

Grunge and metal? Erm no. We don’t have to make **** up lol.

Yeah, I’d say industrial electronic/electroclash influence at best, but definitely not full blown grunge or metal

There's a reason people thought of Hole when this song dropped. But go off. :icant:

It's absolutely grunge coded, idc what anyone says lol

@Shadow has it lined up with his metal songs too

It's a dirty and complex banger. Everything I've wanted from Gaga's pop music :flutter:

It’s and the album probably will be as well very industrial coded. Especially the beat.

Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

Yeah, I think the main argument is influence vs. primary genre (which is semantic af and people tend to get very testy about genre in general, but I still think the nuances are interesting). Definitely has metal and grunge influence

I agree with the main argument you’re making here (and since PI have viewed Gaga’s music thru the lens of, “how would I feel abt this song if it were by a new/different artist?”). Pre-conceived notions abt an artist can def become baggage, I just don’t think it sounds like Hole 🪦

Gaga reading this, thanking @Chlorine for explaining to everybody, and there’s squabbling about genre, missing the rest of the point.

What is that even supposed to mean? Because I don’t agree with the way you classified the genre I’m doing what, exactly?

Well yeah, this isn't like when Monsters said Heavy Metal Lover is heavy metal or something :brat:

Gaga's music has always had genre bending influences and styles. Whether it's the weird metal vibes of the bubblegum pop songs on The Fame or the electronic on ARTPOP or even the rock and country vibes on Joanne (WHICH IS A POP ALBUM :triggered:)

LG7 is about to be where Gaga melts an industrial crack rock and injects it into the veins of pop music :whitney:

Yeah, exactly right. Gaga’s music is always going to be the synthesis of multiple genre influences thru the lens of pop, which is what I love about what she does and which is also why, to the OP’s point, I think it’s exciting to see how she uses to different genre pallets w/ each new album and I also agree that it’s better to approach it with an open mind
