Whenever she switches to her chest voice in the song you notice that “sheen” is gone and the pitch is imperfect when she’s losing her breath and using her natural vocal fry. It sounds absolutely nothing like her VMA performance or her 2009 AMAs when she clearly used auto-tune. If there’s any pitch correction at all, it’s EXTREMELY subtle and definitely not auto-tune, probably a much more sophisticated technology if it’s there at all. I think it’s just compression on her distorted vocals (like normal post production stuff) bc they probably sounded a little harsh on the mic in a not good way, if that. Definitely not a tune issue and I listened back to see. I imagine they do a little polishing for the airing bc live music can sound weird and not this mixed, smooth, etc. But whatever it is is nothing her other performances wouldn’t also have. Shes also in optimal singing position which for ballads she typically isn’t (sitting, hunched, etc.). When she hunches here it’s to help the distortion in her rasp but that’s technique also. Let’s remember Beyoncé did those opening songs for renny standing bc it allowed her the most control of her voice. Seems like the same thing here I think it’s both light pitch correction and, imo, slightly overbearing compression. I love the amount of verb on the vocal, but I just think the compression sands off and dampens her natural tone (which I think is part of the power of the vocal she delivers on this).
