Edonis 28,549
I mentioned this somewhere else, but I really do think this should've just been a Harley film taking place in the same Joker's elseworlds universe of the first film. The whole deranged fan that projects herself onto a killer clown that she shouldn't be idolizing could've made for something really interesting and compelling (and the payoff in the story could've been that more dramatic), but I doubt Todd/WB/or even Phoenix would have been onboard going in that direction. I mean, Arthur felt like he had a full character arc in the first film, it didn't seem like there was a need to drag his story out more imo. oh well. SpadesToStart 2,413
I liked it, I would say 8/10. I loved how the music was incorporated, in fact I wish they pushed that a bit further and went full Chicago in terms of format. Gaga's performance was fantastic. Spoiler My main critique is the ending. I think it was fitting that Arthur died the way he did, but the film needed a splashy Harley button to actually end on, like a full out performance of "That's Life" after she learns Arthur died. I didn't follow the leaks, but I've heard there were a lot of end-of-movie Harley scenes that were left on the cutting room floor, which is a real pity.
Obobo 2,670
Okay hold awn… I just finished my second screening and the movie flows much better. I think there was so much stuff going on at face value during my first screening (digesting the musical scenes, not understanding some dialogue, trying to find a plot, waiting for Gaga scenes, the mouth breathing of the basement dweller who sat beside me, etc). I feel like once the comic book nerds simmer down and video essay youtube channels start deconstructing the movie — it will become a HIT. Spoiler I always knew Harley was supposed to represent us the audience… but I noticed a lot more things happening in the background or from little dialogue that didn’t seem important. Heck, fans are angry that a “random” inmate killed Arthur but if you watch again you notice him in the background of the Asylum scenes reacting positively or negatively to Arthur throughout the film. Also i just realized the shadow in the cartoon hinted the main plot. The shadow was his followers and the fantasy. The shadow outgrew the joker and lives on without him. I still think the musical elements did feel quite random and the courtroom drama could be condensed — aka we need a directors cut with better flow. 2 1

What was that all about... There are soo many parallels that Gotham exist with Harvey Dent/Two Face, Wayne Family etc Gotham is canonically in the state of New York in the the DC world. I'm not an expert, but I believe instead of New York City they have Gotham and Metropolis.

Some people in the theatre really didn’t like it though, they were laughing during the musical parts. It really is a good movie, and it shows how much Joker is just a poor man, and not a « hero ». Gaga’s acting is so good, and I think we see her enough in the movie. It is a movie about Joker, what’s in his mind and not a movie about Lee even if she is a big part of his madness. Todd just made the movie he wanted to, his vision of the Joker and I’m glad he did. I don’t understand the bad reviews. Gaga is just perfect in it, and she must be so proud of herself. This will allow her to star in more movies! Yes. Forget about the reviews at this point. Social media is filled with solitary wolves eager to hate what others are hating so they don't feel that alone anymore. The movie is also about this kind of blind worshipping someone even without knowing them on a intimate level? And that's kinda why lee and Arthur relationship doesn't get a rich development. She admires the idea of Joker not Arthur the man and if she would get to know him deeper sooner maybe she would have lost the interest early on... Robo Ga 15,003
Omg 39% on RT now… Whoever said ‘brace yourself’ is right because this weekend is about to be brutal… take social media breaks yall At least the general consensus is definitely that Gaga slayed and the movie concept itself was flawed. But we most certainly will catch some strays 😩 🤖⚡️

Oooh I agree: Spoiler You put my thoughts into words - they definitely should have gone "full Chicago" because it felt so half-assed. Even if they were scared of branding it as a 'musical', the musical moments should have had an impact on non-musical lovers. A lot of time it was set up well (e.g. the ballroom dance, the sonny & cher scene) and then finished too early! Then we got them singing in their 'normal clothes' which is more cringe than these flashy sequences... That would've been such a FIRE (pun-intended) ending!! Need the deleted scenes so badly. PopReaper 2,194
Watched it yesterday and now, having let my thoughts sit for a little while, my general conclusion is that I didn't hate it nor did I think it was as much of a disaster as the general critics consensus did, but it was a very frustrating watch because of how many interesting ideas this movie had but never really fully explored. Spoiler I thought it was really interesting to have this movie be a metatextual relitigation of the first movie's reception and interpretation by the public, and I also liked the thematic througline of toxic fan adoration, and the way the Gotham population's projections of the Joker persona upon Arthur were not only big enough for it to gain a life of it's own, but big enough that it consumed Arthur completely and then discarded him, once he couldn't (and wouldn't) live up to the mantle he had unintentionally created. It becomes frustrating when the way they choose to go about those themes is by having the characters talk over and over about the last movie's happenings, which means that throughout those scenes there's very little forward movement for the plot, while not even offering enough of an interesting reflection on the last movie to justify so many (and such long) trial scenes. So basically, I think it would've been a much better use of the movie's time if, on the second act, they had paid more attention to developing Arthur and Harley's relationship and also developing Harley as an individual with her own agenda after leaving Arkham (the reveal that she was hiding a privileged upbringing + a psychiatry degree and had most definitely entered Arkham with the sole intention of taking advantage of Arthur was really good imo and should've been more explored, same for the mentions of Harley going to the press and giving interviews as soon as she left Arkham). I also think she left Arkham a bit too early into the movie, tbh. With more development Harley could've been a great (covert) villain. As for the ending, I get what they were trying to do with having someone eventually taking Arthur's mantle as the Joker and having that person embody the original comic book Joker's aura more closely (and I think at least partially Todd - in a bit of a "**** you" moment - wanted that scene to really hammer the point of Arthur, at the end of the day, being a pathetic person), but the lack of any significant interactions with that inmate throughout the film + the fact that we're never gonna see that character again anyway made the scene fall flat for me. Kinda wish he had just copied All That Jazz's ending tbh, but with Arthur ready to be executed on the electric chair. And I actually didn't mind they cut the staircase dancing and singing scene at the end! Framing it as a more intimate moment between both of them made a lot more sense for what was happening with the characters, and I thought that it felt really atmospheric and eerie (specially with the uncertainty of Harley's fate lingering over it) + Harley's line about it being over because Arthur gave up the fantasy was really intriguing and poignant.
