The movie wasnt great but it really wasn’t horrible like the RT score suggests. At least it was better than House of Gucci because during that movie there were moments when I was bored Af. This time around I didn’t really feel the same level of “bruh get me out of here” as I did with that one. But now to come into terms of it Hide contents The movie juxtaposes the Lee/Protesters with their Joker Agenda with us - we only love the violence, we only love the movie when someone is getting killed, or when The Joker with full face of makeup comes on but once "The Joker" doesn't want to be the joker and only wants to be Arthur Fleck - we turn our backs on Arthur/Movie. Think about it; we only enjoyed the musical sequence with Joker/Harlequin but we would roll our eyes if the musical sequence was with Arthur/Lee. I have questions though - do we think that protest group that brought the Joker into their car then he escaped - were they planning on killing him? And why did that prisoner (who might be the canon Joker) killed Arthur? So he could live up to his shadow? I agreee!!! Under the cut: Spoiler What you said is so right. Like I was disappointed when they were singing in their everyday outfits... but that was the point. Todd really played us. Joker fans wanted Joker, Lady Gaga fans wanted Lady Gaga, so he said YOU'RE NOT GETTING WHAT YOU WANT. (the irony of 'let's give the people what they want') Even when there was a beautiful musical sequence, it never lasted as long as I hoped or wanted. Which in hindsight, was again, the point. LE SIGH. I don't know if the protest group were going to kill him, I see it as kidnapping him because they can. They definitely weren't thinking of looking after him though. The prisoner is definitely the foreshadowing of the canon Joker. It's just an image now; anyone can be him, anyone can be the shadow. Pretty bleak, actually. RIP Arthur you deserved better even though you murdered 6 people. Edited October 4 by MEM
Just A Holy Fool 2,418
Yikes, down to 40% on RT… at least Gaga gets some shoutout in the critical consensus. Joaquin Phoenix's eponymous Joker takes the stand in a sequel that dances around while the story remains still, although Lady Gaga's wildcard energy gives Folie á Deux some verve.

I just saw a tweet with over 88k likes saying how people were leaving as more musical numbers came up… I find it hard to believe this. The reaction seems so dramatized, like I get a lot of people didn’t like it but something’s fishy over here. Also, a lot of these hit tweets seem to come from Marvel fans, is this what they do? I don’t find it fishy at all. I’ve been telling you all ever since I saw the whole plot leak from Venice that most audiences are absolutely going to hate this movie and it’s like no one wanted to believe me JFKDKDK

That’s just the nature of divisive movies. This movie was not made to please. It in fact goes out of it’s way to actively not give anyone the film they wanted. Whether what it is is still pleasing to the viewer will vary. This movie is intentionally confrontational about this, and the heavily mixed response is not a shock. Some people will really love this. General audiences are going to mostly really hate it. None of this is particularly surprising given what they did with this. There was no world where this film’s story as is was going to land with acclaim from all sides. I fear this may be the first time Monsters who aren’t deep into film may be experiencing what an actually deeply polarizing film is like and what that inspires in it’s audience.

Future Lovers 6,447
I think a big thing a lot of you also maybe aren’t considering is that the music is inserted into this in a very haphazard way. They were right that it isn’t a proper musical. In a proper musical, the songs would push the plot forward and be natural to the flow of the film. Here, none of the music does that. It feels at times like it was originally not a musical but they turned into one. I don’t think audiences outright hate musicals, they hate what this film is doing with its music. And Warner actively lying about it in the marketing (hell they lied about a LOT in those trailers) isn’t helping.
Louvre 923
Just saw it, hugely disappointed. The movie wasn't so great period but I was only there to see Gaga and I think the movie and its marketing was just disrespectful to her and her fans. She was in it for like 25 minutes... and most of the time she was just sitting in the background saying nothing. She was stunning and did an amazing job with what they gave her though, I hope that her next movie is a character study where the focus is purely on her. Tod philips... its so over for you girl. Also... why would they pay Gaga 10 million dollars to have her do NOTHING...
Louvre 923
Also, it feels like originally there was a different plot in mind and later while editing the film todd decided to change the whole plot but with like limited footage... the story felt like jagged puzzle pieces trying to be fit together. The only silver lining to this is that everyone wanted more Gaga, but ultimately maybe it was a good thing that she wasn't on screen as much bc theres no way anyone can blame her for this hot mess of a movie when she was given literally nothing.
lance13 1,030
Just got home from seeing it.....twice.....and honestly, I loved it. I thought Gaga was AMAZING and she looks incredible throughout........especially on the stairs at the end. I watched Joker last night so it would be fresh in my head, and I'm SO glad I did. Joaquin is GREAT in this. I'm almost mesmerized when he's on the screen. He plays Arthur like noone else can or ever could. I would have liked to have seen Lee get more "unhinged" on the stairs at the end. I feel like they probably cut that out, and they really needed it. She's pretty cool and collected throughout the entire movie and I wanted to see her go batsh#$ crazy. I was never bored at any time and I sat through it twice, back to back. Most of us have been waiting for this since we found out Gaga was going to be Lee. I feel like over the course of time it took to film and make it's way to the theater, people have had so much time to build it up in their minds and create every detail of how it should look. These people were bound to be disappointed with any version of the movie that was released. Honestly, I go to the movies to be entertained and I don't really pay attention to critics. Reviews are basically opinions and everyone has them. It must be nice to get paid for them. So, go see it and be familiar with the original Joker. Leave your expectations at the door and just enjoy it. I'm going back tomorrow for 2 more showings. 😆

The one where Tina Fey tells Lindsay Lohan that the weird thing about her tests was that all the work was right but the just the answers were wrong. It feels like Todd had a solid vision and put a lot of care into the composition of this film but then kind of purposefully fudged up important elements of the movie like Lee in post production and the musical aspect by not getting an expert in that field involved. Idk. The more I think about it the more my opinion shifts.

Idk. The more I think about it the more my opinion shifts. After the first film came out both Joaquin and Todd said that the only way they would return for a sequel is if there was a compelling reason to do so, and if they could do something different and innovative. I think they both probably liked the idea of a musical. However, I truly do not think that the plot that we get in the final cut is at all the movie that they intended to shoot. I don’t know when in the process it changed, but there is so much pointing to a completely different version of this movie that I have to wonder if they did start to make some thing really new and envelope pushing but they and Warner Brothers got cold feet partway through and pivoted and then completely changed the direction in post.
PlastiscGuy 20,636
I... like it. A lot I went prepared to be disappointed, after seeing so many negative comments but I found myself enjoying the film quite a lot. The musical segments were fun (I actually loved the movie renditions more than Harlequin's) Gaga was incredible, I think her acting improved so much since House of Gucci. It was a joy to see her Spoiler My only problem is the way they advertised the movie as the "Joker and Lee" film, when in reality, it was still a full on Joker movie, with Lee as a supporting role, nothing more (in regard of her screentime and poor character development) PG.
eddyjeddy 1,305
GUYS NEED TO DISCUSS THIS: Spoiler When the jury was like "We the people of NYC" wasn't the movie based in Gotham? What was that all about... There are soo many parallels that Gotham exist with Harvey Dent/Two Face, Wayne Family etc But in the cultural sense, I just speak in future tense
Dimitri 13
Just saw it and I really really liked it. Some people in the theatre really didn’t like it though, they were laughing during the musical parts. It really is a good movie, and it shows how much Joker is just a poor man, and not a « hero ». Gaga’s acting is so good, and I think we see her enough in the movie. It is a movie about Joker, what’s in his mind and not a movie about Lee even if she is a big part of his madness. Todd just made the movie he wanted to, his vision of the Joker and I’m glad he did. I don’t understand the bad reviews. Gaga is just perfect in it, and she must be so proud of herself. This will allow her to star in more movies! 2
