A charity working with homeless people in Auckland, New Zealand unknowingly distributed candies filled with a potentially lethal dose of methamphetamine in its food parcels after the sweets were donated by a member of the public.

Auckland City Mission told reporters on Wednesday that staff had started to contact up to 400 people to track down parcels that could contain the sweets — which were solid blocks of methamphetamine enclosed in candy wrappers. New Zealand's police have opened a criminal investigation.

The amount of methamphetamine in each candy was up to 300 times the level someone would usually take and could be lethal, according to the New Zealand Drug Foundation — a drug checking and policy organization, which first tested the candies.

The City Missioner said eight families, including at least one child, had reported consuming the contaminated candies since Tuesday. No one was hospitalized and Robinson said the “revolting” taste meant most had immediately spat them out.

The charity's food bank only accepts donations of commercially produced food in sealed packaging. The pineapple candies, stamped with the label of Malaysian brand Rinda, “appeared as such when they were donated", arriving in a retail-sized bag, she added.

The candies had been donated sometime in the past six weeks. It was not clear how many had been distributed in that time and how many were made of methamphetamine. source

WHAT?? We have such a god damn meth problem here it's ****ing disgusting. The fact that these people who were just looking for food and needed charity could've taken meth unknowingly or even died makes me sick. Or it could've ended up with more poor/homeless people hooked on drugs. Maybe that was their goal. I'm really hoping it was an accident

Edit: I'm so ****ing mad right now because I just put this together. Our pathetic government run by piece of **** scumbag businessmen made pseudoephedrine legal over the counter again, when past governments made it illegal because it was hugely contributing to meth production. But noo they want people with sniffly noses to keep working to fuel the business machine to supposedly help the economy. Now we are hearing more and more about meth on the rise again. I'm so MAD. I can't believe the IDIOTS in this country voted them in

But like are you serious?? Even charities are not safe for people in need anymore. I'm sick of seeing methheads on the streets. I'm sick of watching the homeless population grow. I'm sick of watching the wealth gap grow as big businesses and landlords receive all the support, while regular people have important services and support cut, and important sectors losing all of their funding

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

No not at all. We only sue if it's completely necessary. You also can't sue for absolutely everything like you can in America. Who would even be suing who? Would the underprivileged sue the non-profit food bank charity for something that isn't their fault? Would the food bank sue the criminals when/if they're caught? And if they're making meth I doubt they'd be paying much out to them once they're in jail.. What is the point in suing here? Who seeks to profit?

To sell it inconspicuously without getting caught. Idk exactly how it works but I believe they'd be selling their rocks (in candy wrappers) to a dealer that would then split it up and sell it

it was probably to smuggle in a huge amount, it would then be picked up by the next dealer who would cut it to smaller amounts

i wonder if somehow some innocent old lady got ahold of it and thought to give it to charity :messga:

this box of 'candy' probably had a street value of millions :air:
